i love the shadowing and lighting of this picture, i also love how you made the water look. the characters are pretty cute too, but i love the color scheme you used. it has a very romantic feel to it.

I'll be one of those annoying people and say I'm not very fond of this pairing- Not just because of the BL, but more because I cannot take the Free! characters seriously as romantic/sexual individuals. Their friendship is very genuine, but for the rest it just seems the creators are trolling the fangirls with heaps of playful innuendo. To me, it's more humour than serious romance.
That being said- this is absolutely gorgeous. I love the light and the colouring style, as well as the delicate, sensual expressions of the characters. The water and wetness of their hair has also been rendered beautifully.
My only criticism would be that the BG seems rather flat and the light on Makoto's cheek and bridge of his nose looks a little strange. Finally, the contrast of Makoto's ear ans the hair in his neck seems to be a lot lower than that of the rest of his face and hair.
So yeah, tiny tiny details I'm nitpicking about. Overall, wonderful job!

i agree. while i do not like BL or anything close to that, this painting is absolutely beautiful so i can't help but love it even though i hate it..if that even makes sense!

That said, I wouldn't go as far as saying I hate BL or anything. It's just not my cup of tea. I wouldn't mind serious homosexual relationships, but with most of the BL and yaoi I have seen, it's more about fanservice than characters building a relationship. So to each their own, BL is just not for me. But I cannot bring my self to hate ships I don't like, it's such a trivial thing. I'm always surprised at the shitstorm on forums and message boards when someone declares their OTP and people disagree

I think Boy's Love is more of a synonym for yaoi, and thus a genre rather than a term to use for homosexuality. That's how I use it at least. To me, there's a difference between a film such as Merchant Ivory's Maurice which seriously portrays a homosexual relationship with psychologically complex characters and a realistic portrayal of their relationship and something like DRAMAtical Murder visual novel which I have not played myself so I may be mistaken in my interpretation which is more targeted at female (and LGTB) gratification and fanservice. It's more audience-oriented rather than character&story-oriented, I think.
Yaoi is often said to be an acronym for (roughly translated) "no plot, no point, no meaning" and follows the logic that, if one hot guy is popular with the ladies (and gays), two hot guys doing hot stuff must be even better. That said, yaoi is by some also considered to be ground-breaking in its openness regarding LGTB relationships and be a step forward towards more flexible and accepting attitudes regarding gender identity and sexual orientation. However, in BL fan art of shows like Free!, I mostly see whimsical cuteness and hot guy-on-guy action and must say it comes of (to me) as rather shallow and not entirely in line with canon, which is why I personally don't much like such interpretations. But again, to each there own ^^

There is a lot I want to say about this and I don't know where to begin.
The lightning is awesome, the colors you used are wonderful; perfectly smooth, and their expressions, gosh! their expressions are priceless, I can feel the love and passion between these two. The water also looks very good and their hair looks perfect.
I just have a tiny observation: the light in Makoto's cheek looks kind of weird to me, but anyway, is something not very relevant, ha ha.
In a few words, this makes my heart smile. ♥
