Although I've been drawing since early childhood, my art made real level up only in the last 4 years, when I started drawing every day for 2-3 hours.
โ
I went to college and studied graphic design for 4 years. Then I worked in a design studio, making branding, packaging, etc. Many people I met were sure that good design means good drawing. Yes, the fields of design and art have some things in common, but in the real life they challenge different tasks with almost opposite methodsโฆ
โ
When I got too tired from functional, clear design during my university years, it was such a joy just to draw characters from your favourite anime! It was so fun and inspiring that I continued to draw more and more day by day. At this time I didn't think drawing can become my source of money, I struggled on finding a unique style, my works were 'dirty colored' and barely as good as drawings I saw on deviantart. I was the happiest human on Earth when I got my first commission order! Now I'm a freelance illustrator.
โ
There is a direct relation between how many hours you spend on drawing and how good the drawings became. It's not easy. Itโs a long journey. I'm still far from reaching all of my goals... But the game rules are simple: if you want to come somewhere, keep going. Be patient ๐ฆ

This is such a beautiful and truthful sentiment.
I absolutely understand what you mean.
Even as a writer, the premise is the same - every book I write, is better than the previous and every word I write brings me closer to the next great story. Even if just by technical skill alone. There's always some improvement in your craft as you develop it. I'm glad you kept at it because your work is stunning and awe-inspiring.
I used to be a graphic designer, too, actually -- I did it for many years until I became tired of being bossed around by clients who didn't know what they wanted or needed. I was finally able to let it go and follow my writing aspirations instead. However, I still use my design skills to may social media materials, advertisements for my books, and a lot more, so the skills are helpful in both fields.
