Description Bioshock Infinite is set in a Steam-Punk cloud city, floating over the American states, which is a far cry from the Underwater biodomes of Bioshock 1 & 2.

I was wondering what the connection was to previous game, besides Plasmid-like powers and the Political power struggles and after watching the 15-minute game play trailer, I literally went "OOOOH" when the Song Bird showed up.

So we go from a dark underwater city where little girls run around freely and are protected by slow and clumsy men in diving suits, to a brightly lit city in the sky where a grown women is forced to stay in one area and is protected by a fast and incredibly mobile mechanical bird........I'm sorry, but when we asked for another Bioshock game, I don't think taking everything about Bioshock and NOT DOING THAT was quite what we had in mind. No plasmids, no Big Daddies, no Little Sisters, no Rapture, no ADAM...How is this Bioshock in any way, shape, or form?!

Because what bioshock is about is extreme ideologies and how they defeat themselves and corrupt the people preaching them turning what is supposed to be a utopia into a dystopia. Objectivism in Bioshock 1, some form of Socialism in Bioshock 2 and American Exceptionalism and Religious Extremism in Bioshock Infinite. They also place great importance on their settings to tell their stories and create a mood. Also in gameplay mechanics, it's a combination powers and weapons that you use in a tactical way to approach combat.
I personally am glad they didn't return to rapture. It allowed them to create an entirely new world and treat different themes rather than retreading things. Plus I thought rapture already wasn't as interesting to explore anymore in Bioshock 2 because the feeling of awe was diminished since we'd already seen it all, Bioshock Infinite allows that feeling to return as strong as ever.

...Huh...When you put it like that, it makes sense. Although in all honesty, I still loved exploring Rapture, I can see your point. Thanks for your perspective on the matter.

Well I certainly understand that, Rapture was pretty incredible and atmospheric.

I wouldn't know. I made the comment before Infinite came out, and I haven't finished it yet.

In the same way that Bioshock was a spiritual successor to System Shock. It's meant to have a similar feel. You get vigors which are basically plasmids, Handyman instead of Big Daddies, and Columbia in the sky versus Rapture in the sea. I'd imagine at some point they will finish Rapture's story eventually.

But whereas Bioshock kinda feels like System Shock, I've not had one single moment where I've looked at Bioshock Infinite and said, "Yeah, I can see the connection." And maybe it's just counting my chickens before they hatch, but I do hope they go back to Rapture some day.

Whoops, What I meant to say was rapture does not exist, within the actual games universe. There, that make less sense

KleinerKiller In reply to MinerShock [2013-04-05 16:51:38 +0000 UTC]

Still debatable, actually, depending on how you interpret the ending. But semantics.

MinerShock In reply to KleinerKiller [2013-04-05 17:38:35 +0000 UTC]

Well I think that Anna (I'll refer to Elizabeth by her real name from now on) really does create her own tears. And bioshock is just her imagination gone wrong. Maybe she had Atlas Shrugged in her library from the future!

KleinerKiller In reply to MinerShock [2013-04-05 17:49:18 +0000 UTC]

Remember what she said about there "always being a lighthouse, always Booker, always [her], always a Songbird," or something along those lines. The story is repeating itself INFINITEly, just with subtle variations: Rapture is Columbia, Jack is Booker, Elizabeth is a Little Sister, Songbird is a Big Daddy. That last part especially makes sense when you consider that Jeremiah Fink helped create Songbird based on a tear through which he saw a fusion of man and machine, heavily speculated to be a Big Daddy.
Constants and variables, my man. Constants and variables.

Then you and I are at an impasse. Agree to disagree?
I have doubts, too. I mean, what's the point? Especially in calling it 'Bioshock' when it's barely similar to its namesake. I'm just gonna ignore the hype, read some non-mainstream reviews, and play the game if my dad picks it up from the bargain bin at Wal Mart. XD
