Description
This image is a personal project, so doesn't belong to anyone else, i.e. a client. The full license for this image is £1000 ($1650). Why so much? Because I sell prints of this image regularly at conventions. By selling the full license I would not be able to sell any more prints.I had to let this go as i was fine tuning endlessly.
It has been completely painted in Photoshop CS5 using a Wacom Intuos 4 large tablet. It took me about 3 months (on and off) mainly during evenings.
I used 1 point perspective techniques with a little help from the new CS5 vanishing point tool for a 2nd (very slight) vanishing point. I just aint got the time to learn a 3D package...yet.
I created the main central area first and the added more structures as I went on, making the composition spread further horizontally.
I masked area's and painted in the details using the vanishing point grids as guides. On occasion I used a textured brush or city textures which were manipulated over and over and reduced in size dramatically until I could piece them together to make new textures.
I wanted to add a more detailed space craft but my inexperience in art has limited me this time round.
The lighting was draining - I used lots of lens flares, shrunk down to small points!
To create a similar image would now take me about 5 to 7 days. The cost would be £500 to £700 ($800 to $1120).

The perspective and the light work is simply beyond awesome.
The long work was really worth the result (in my mind anyway ^^)

My first impression was that this was a highly detailed 3D render, but when I enlarged the image I could tell it was done by hand. The amount of effort to produce something this detailed is very impressive. You've done an amazing job with the lighting in the painting, and the reflection on the road is a great touch. This is a great piece to put in your portfolio.

yea do you have any tips on where to get started, i already have photoshop elements 4 and lightwave im either going to get a macbook pro or a pc built for editing within 3 months and im getting a wacom tablet for christmas, i also have a friend who has cs5 and lightroom 3 im going to persuade him to let me use them

JamesLedgerConcepts In reply to buttface76 [2011-12-06 13:11:06 +0000 UTC]
Well, a wacom tablet is a great start! I started with a wacom pen and touch which was MUCH better than using a mouse. Eventually I moved on to a wacom intuos4 large, which is better again but NOT essential.
I also used Elements to start with, before getting CS5. To do digital painting you don't actually need anything more than Elements, as all the painting tools are already in Elements.
I use an imac i7 which is more than adequate, but bare in mind that digital painting can zap the power of a computer, esspecially when doing large pictures at high resolution. It get's worse as more and more layers are added to the project. Keep layers to a minimum, by flattening the image. This will keep you improving, rather than keeping hold of precious layers and constantly using the undo command. If you go wrong, paint over your mistakes, don't undo as you won't learn to improve as much.
Books and DVD's are excellent, though not always good for beginners as they are usually too advanced.
Practive drawing EVERYTHING you see and make sure you draw in perspective so you get used to seeing things from ALL angles, not just straight on.
Practice painting over the top of photographs - sample the colors off the photo and draw buildings on top of other buildings or next to them. This will get you used to colors and lighting. Keep shapes simple as most things are made up of basic shapes like rectangles, tubes, pyramids and spheres etc.
