Description
This image is a personal project, so doesn't belong to anyone else, i.e. a client. The full license for this image is £1000 ($1650). Why so much? Because I sell prints of this image regularly at conventions. By selling the full license I would not be able to sell any more prints.I had to let this go as i was fine tuning endlessly.
It has been completely painted in Photoshop CS5 using a Wacom Intuos 4 large tablet. It took me about 3 months (on and off) mainly during evenings.
I used 1 point perspective techniques with a little help from the new CS5 vanishing point tool for a 2nd (very slight) vanishing point. I just aint got the time to learn a 3D package...yet.
I created the main central area first and the added more structures as I went on, making the composition spread further horizontally.
I masked area's and painted in the details using the vanishing point grids as guides. On occasion I used a textured brush or city textures which were manipulated over and over and reduced in size dramatically until I could piece them together to make new textures.
I wanted to add a more detailed space craft but my inexperience in art has limited me this time round.
The lighting was draining - I used lots of lens flares, shrunk down to small points!
To create a similar image would now take me about 5 to 7 days. The cost would be £500 to £700 ($800 to $1120).

Reminds me of something we could see in TRON. Excellent render. Thanks for sharing.

Make sure you have a valid visa!
Took weeks, on and off, masking and using hundreds of shrunken lens flares. Too long to be honest.

Definitely a cross between Blade Runner and Tron with a hint of Coruscant architecture thrown in. Awesomely brilliant work. You deserve the DD.

Kind of getting to see this late as I let my deviation folder fill up to about 10k before the OCD kicks in and I go through it all.
Your work is really amazing, very very high quality professional level stuff, as a lot of people are pointing out. To weigh in on the 2D vs 3D software thing, I would advise you not to bother with 3D for concept art. If you're looking to get into animation or level design for a game that's another story, but for what you're doing 3D would just slow you down (a lot). And you really don't need it, trust us, lol.

Thanks loads for that!
I am glad you mentioned the 3D situation. I wasn't really wised-up to it.
It seems that I will stick to using photoshop as I can now see how 3D software is geared up for something quite different. I don't want to slow things down any more than they already are!
Good info.

I just love this environment. I think it benefits from not having any spaceships in it, if for nothing else, but to show how much you put into the scene by itself. the light glows add so much atmosphere and the perspective looks perfect. It's such a great scene and well done on creating it without the aid of 3D software. To me, that makes it even more special.

That's fantastic sparks, thanks for that. I agree with the fact that it isn't spoiled with spaceships. Sometimes it just isn't necessary as too often compositions become too busy with activity. I am glad I left it as it was and didn't add something that would distract from all that effort. I will bear your advice in mind for future works. Being able to draw/paint is one thing but the art of 'composition' is another world of it's own. I have much to learn and be aware of.

Yeah, you have to decide somewhere in yourself whether you think it will enhance the image. Whenever I add something in my own work I ask the question of myself, does it add to the picture or take something away from it? Usually it helps me to remain that little more critical.
Anyway, you are most welcome. Learning is a constant thing and rarely does it end whatever stage you are at. Keep pushing yourself!

These are singlehandedly the most valuable plugi-ins in the world. If you don't have them you should at least try them. They are completely compatible with Photoshop and many of them will cut your creation time down considerably. All of my lighting effects are done with these..
P.S. I don't work for either of these companies or get paid if you purchase their products. They are just that good.
