Description this is a little project i have thought about doing for a while and have finally gotten around to doing it, but still has a little more work.

it is a halftone stencil drilled out of 5mm ply board, i had to measure and mark each individual dot (roughly 1870 dots all up), then drill out with the right size drill bit. all up it took me bout 8 hours. kinda disappointing that the ply was to thin and started to fall apart, but it kinda adds to it.
the final product will kinda be like a halftone light stencil, im going to mount the board on a frame, and and fit some sort of back light behind the frame, will upload a pic of the finished product.

Also I tried a couple of different ways of doing it. I found that sandwiching the piece I wanted to use between 2 pieces of scrap wood helped to prevent the wood from getting torn up.
I know what you mean about it being time consuming. The project took me way longer then I expected.

I saw this piece and it blew me away. I tried my own version of your concept. Wanted to give credit where credit is due, so I linked your piece. Hope you don't mind.[link]

Very nice idea. The drilling gives it a very industrial vibe. The fact that the ply is breaking adds very much to this, so it's not really a prob at all

If you wanted to fix the parts that fell apart, it would be really easy to use the first one as a template; just put another board (maybe a thicker one?) behind it and drill through the holes you've already got. Then all you'd have to do is measure & mark the few dot holes that were broken and voila! You'd have the stencil you wanted to begin with!

Having another piece of solid wood lying flush against the backside of the board you're drilling will keep the back from splintering when the bit passes through. Just make sure there isn't a gap between the board you're putting your holes in and your backstop board. If that doesn't work for you, blame my woodshop teacher. I can give you his email address.

Anyways though, the idea of a drilling a halftone stencil out of a board is a new concept to me and I think it's not only brilliant but your results were fantastic!

so sick. I love it. Instantly makes me want to do one of my own. It looks awesome, has mad texture. The Wood falling apart in places definitely makes it better In the end.
