Finally FreeInspired by “The Great Escape” by Boys Like Girls
Finally. We could be free. United at last in the half-lucid beginnings of our new eternity adjoined as our old lives burned. The gardens of shadows that emerged from the darkness, bringing to view the million shades of black we never knew, and never bothered to see. But that was for later; it all paled in comparison to being with Her. No matter how dark the world seemed, just being with her made me burst with light, and her face lit up as well. Quite literally we shined in the cooling new world we were beginning to belong to. As our surroundings became more solid, tears started to string from our faces; we could feel ourselves leaving, or rather, arriving. It felt so good to be by her side, and to know she can never be taken away, or kept from me again. With an energized grace she jumped up and grabbed my hand, dragged me around our new grounds. She raced along and danced, screaming aloud with childish joy at the top of her lungs. Brimming with wonder at the different way sound traveled here. At everything. I hollered back as we dashed through the gardens of shadow, and our connection to the other world disintegrated further; us feeling the spirits watching us but no longer caring. I knew they silently chided us for our childish actions, attributing it to our relative youth to this realm. In reality it was because we’d never felt so alive.
We made the great escape. We no longer had to hear the words of our families, or faceless people of society. Not that their words mattered anyways, only that they could keep us apart. We forget yesterday, and all the days before, because they no longer mattered.
Our celebration halted as our connection to the other world waned. Eyes closed we relished the sensation, as our bodies on the other world burned. The wisps of a connection thinned and thinned till it crumbled like ash and blew away into the ether. Dieing. Our spirits no longer connected to that realm and our bodies. It was gone to us. Not worth remembering in comparison to the now and onward. Elder spirits welcomed us to our new positions in this realm and we stood strong and united together against their expectations. We could do anything now that we were together. The Spirits’ telepathy droned on as my hand and hers embraced. We felt a new connection form. Through it flowed love, and relief, because now- we were finally free.
