Description This giant of a tree - situated on the grounds of the country-house Verwolde near Laren in the Dutch province of Gelderland - is considered to be the thickest oak-tree in the country. It circumference is nearly 7,70 m, and its age is about 450 years.
There is a nice story about it: in 1767 a miller wanted to buy this tree in order to make to two asses for a new mill, but the baron did not agree to the deal and so saved the tree. At the time the circumference of the tree was 4,60 m.
The tree is alas not in very good shape these days. Though the public is kept away from its trunk by the fence, polution is cannot be stopped this way. And there is a lot of polution coming from the cornfield which is heavily fertilized. This is said to be pretty bad for the tree, but unfortunately it seems to go on.
When we were there yesterday this tree was not surrounded by the high number of people who want to see this curiosity regularly, as it was already in the late afternoon. So fortunately no people in the picture. But the sky was pretty poor, I am afraid.
