Description This picture was taken just as the two submitted before on the dike (or levee) at the River Lek near Schalkwijk/The Netherlands. In the light of the low December sun the river side of the dike is still brightly lit, while the landside is already in the shade.

Such a dike landscape is very characteristic for the riverland in the centre of the Netherlands where the delta of the River Rhine would be unlivable without the work of generations who have made this landscape with their hands.

Somewhere here the northern border of the Roman Empire ran for centuries! So it may just be a dike road, there is so much history which floats in the air, from the old Batavians, the Romans, the mediaval Frisians and Franks and then the Vikings who travelled up the river in order to rob and destroy. Only some miles further up lies the mediaval city of Dorestad, now Wijk bij Duurstede, once one of the most important trading centres of the northwest of Europa destroyed by the Vikings about 850. And so much more came after that, too much to mention it here.

Just a dike road!
