With your virtuous patronage, we have been able to modify the system to increase efficiency and productivity still further. The metallic capsules needed to store our fuel supply are still of great expense, but I have spoken extensively with the coppermongers and they assure me that familiarity with the pattern and the bulk purchase of future orders will greatly reduce overall cost per unit.

In the new system, several interior restraints have been included, increasing surface contact with the subject and preventing undue movement. The end of the cylinder may now be removed to show an internal wall containing two holes, large enough to snugly permit the ankles but preventing any withdrawal of the subject's feet. The key component of the new system are two intricate copper assemblies that twine inbetween the toes and connect to the base of the cylinder. These lock the toes back and prostrate the feet in an upright position, providing easy accessibility. The greatest feature of all is the device's inverted pyromancy field, protecting the base of the cylinder from heat and channeling any flames that would be exuded from the limbs into the main thermal mass of the cylinder itself. The main body of the device is water-tight, and can be immersed into the wall of large tank providing the main feed for the complex with only the end cap protruding. For modesty purposes, we have also loaned a garment of linked chains to the occupant.

It is my pleasure to report that our prototype is performing admirably. I will confess that this is in no small part to our first test subject, which appears to have been equipped with feet that are both exceptionally large, and, based on the reports of the attendants employed in stimulating them, are extremely sensitive to touch. The containment field prevents burning materials brought into contact with them, and we have experimented extensively with brushes of varying stiffness, increasingly strong itching powders and sensitizing oils, a variety of pointed and blunt probes, and the bare hands of the attendants themselves. I may add that the girls have taken eagerly to this new task on their roster of duties, and can be relied upon to tickle intensively, even for long periods. With extensive testing, we have determined that peak heat production can usually be maintained for three hours with the appropriate strong inducement, after which the subject will begin to flag and productivity will decrease. To take advantage of this, we usually keep the device powered for three three-hour shifts every day, separated by 1-hour breaks to recharge. Often this will consist of a few minutes of icing of the feet with cubes, perhaps another hour of itching powder smeared over her feet, an hour of relatively light tickling with hands, feathers, and some small prods, and then the last hour an intense tickling with wire brushes. The first 2/3rds of the experience appears to 'prime' the subject, creating an overall far more intense and reliable flame. The fuel in question has repeatedly made demands to be released, used vulgar language when addressing the staff, and I am informed she regularly swears revenge against the institution of public hygiene in general, as well as occasionally blaspheming. So far, all resistance has been passive; it has been reported to me that she often tries to both avoid laughing and to avoid firing up upon the start of a shift, a process that seldom lasts more than a few minutes (Ms. Nahany apparently made a deliberate effort to draw the process out, costing valuable heating time, and was reprimanded for laxity by an extensive stay of her own in one of the unused prototypes, with several other attendants working on her. She has since become a model employee).

I pray your lordship will pardon me, as this is lewd and unseemly, but in light of your generosity I feel impelled to share our progress in as much detail as possible. After prolonged testing, it is apparent that the Tiefling appears to flame up both more intensely and for longer periods while in a state of sexual arousal, perhaps an homage to the corrupting influence of her devilish forefathers. Complicating the issue, she has apparently frequently protested that her feet are strong erogenous zone, crudely complaining to the attendants in no uncertain language the physical effect that the process has on her. It is most unwholesome to acknowledge this aspect, but I have had her fitted with a metallic chastity belt to prevent her polluting herself, and the attendants guarding her during recharge periods are both all female and under strict orders to watch her and prevent any attempts of self-pollution while her devilkin hands are free.

Tieflings have a nasty and underserved reputation as thieves, vagabonds, and shady characters at the best of times, prone to spreading mischievousness and whorish ways. And Ember may be responsible for approximately half of this reputation by herself. But here and now she has put aside her dubious past in pursuit of a more productive and respectable career as a space-heater, and is proving quite good at it. Who knows, in another month she may be promoted all the way to the lofty heights of 'hot-tub' status, all on her lonesome.

I fiddled with the background on this one, but it didn't seem that important and I could not pick a pattern. I eventually just blacked the whole thing out, which I think helps to indicate Ember's complete ignorance of her surroundings, with most of her world consisting of a metal tube with her feet very much on the wrong side of the walls. I did rather the lazy thing and didn't show her hands, but I want to swear that it was only because of space constraints, and in my defence I did show some suspiciously disembodied hands working at her feet. They are still very much the devil (no pun intended), but I tentatively think that I'm getting better at drawing them. I am also very slowly working against my addiction to over-shading things, which is still very much a learning curve.
