To get overhead shots (granted, for film, not photography, but the concept is same) I built a camera crane out of some wood and screws. It lets me get overhed shots without getting a tripod or its shadow in the shot. It does take some work to build one, but I'm sure there are alternatives to it.
The general idea is to have a camera on some kind of plane that attaches on a swivel to a long piece of wood, which is attached by a swivel to another plane that rests on a tripod. A rope runs along the whole thing, attached at holes on each piece of wood so when you pull on it, you can adjust the angle the camera makes with the ground. Umm... here are the best instuctions I could find. [link] The instructions are simpler than they sound. Hope it helps.
Or you can just have someone hold the camera while its taped to a 2 by 4.
