Description
I've uploaded a painting yesterday about a little girl and a snowman and had a few of you note me on how I actually painted it and how long it took me. This painting took me around 6 hours from start to finish in total but I didn't do it all in one session but did bits when I could. I'm going to very quickly describe each panel just to show you what I do. I hope this helps anyone that likes my style and wants to do the same
Starting from top left:
Panel 1. I always do a sketch or doodle; this is very very rough with some colour added just so I can determine how it will look like. This one was originally meant to be with a little girl reaching for a glowing star on a Christmas tree but I changed it half way.
Panel 2. This is when I line-draw on top on a new layer on top of the sketch. I spend a lot of time on this as the better the line-draw, the easier it is (well for me anyway). I love figure drawing as I did a lot of it when I was in Art College.
Panel 3. I did two more separate layers here as each layer I blocked the colours (hard brush 100%) of the skin and the cute fluffy dressing gown and boots.
Panel 4. With the blocked colours I created a layer mask for each, being as I did the line-draw so precise, removing the lines should reveal the blocking as shown. Then I started adding depth and shades to her legs (soft brush at 50%). I’ve already decided where my light source was coming from and put the shadows and high lights where they should be.
Panel 5. Done the shading/lighting on the gown and boots. Also used a hair brush to do the little fluffy bits.
Panel 6: Done more shadows so it adds realism and body to the painting. Also added a overlay on top of the gown and boots to give a pattern to it. If you look closely, it’s just squidgy lines all over the place.
Panel 7. Added the snowman and shading (also used a mask layer for this and processes used in panel 2,3,4. The position of the snowman was to the right but I decided to move it to the left so I could added more footprints.
Panel 8. Added the button, carrot nose, twig arms, hat and scarf.
Panel 9. Added background and falling snow and footprints.
These are only a few steps and there were tons of changes as I’m going deeper into the painting. I’s changed the scarf and messed around with the shadows a lot in order to make everything belong together. The hardest thing for me in this painting was I didn’t have any references but even though it can be very challenging the results when you’re happy with it, is very rewarding.
I hope you like this and maybe answers a lot of questions to the people who noted me and to you on how I do my paintings. Take care and thank you for taking the time to view this
