The difference between a dryad and a hamadryad in Greek Myth is rather complex, particularly since the view of both dryads and hamadryads not only changed over time, but was different from region to region, and from writer to writer. The short of it, however, is that in Greek Myth, a hamadryad will die if their "home tree" dies, while a dryad won't. Both, however, are powerful nature spirits who quite literally have the ability to yell to the Gods and have them answer at any time, so messing with them was unwise.
