Finally, we've disembarked and started settling into our new accommodations. It's a far cry from my quaint loft in Georgetown, but in this stark, alien landscape, it's home. There's an odd humor to this new reality - a mixture of awe and disbelief. A moment of "I'm really living in the future" followed immediately by a quizzical "I'm living in the future?"
I suppose Hollywood and its glamorization of space travel are to blame for any initial disappointment. Films like "Interstellar," "The Martian," and "Gravity" had painted such grand, adventurous pictures of life beyond Earth. The reality, however, leans more towards functional efficiency than epic drama.
One saving grace of our base is the sense of privacy. Yes, there are communal areas for work and shared activities, but each of us also has private sleeping quarters - a small but significant consolation. It's not quite dorm room living, rather something more akin to an efficient studio apartment.
A crewmate cracked a joke that our arrival felt like the first episode of the old MTV show "The Real World." I half expected to find hidden cameras and a production crew waiting to surprise us. We may be pioneers on a new frontier, but some things – humor, camaraderie, the need for a private moment – remain distinctly human.
We're all pretty jet-lagged - or is it star-lagged? Regardless, we're tired. But despite our fatigue, the palpable excitement can't be denied. Tomorrow, we break ground. Literally. As the first settlers on Mars, we'll be making history with every shovel, every brick, every step we take. No pun intended, indeed.
