Thank you, The camera's DOF helped hide the fact that the crowd is just the base "M.O.M Crowd Generator" modern characters

The experiment went very well, I'd say - what’s an arena without audience, after all... And there is so much going on in the background - the mounted rhino probably would have made even the jaded crowd in the Flavian Amphitheater jump from their seats!

Thank you, All the empty seats bothered me too, so I thought "M.O.M Crowd Generator" might work. I cheated and used the default characters, but the camera's DOF helped hide that they are just modern characters on planes. Then I went a little crazy adding stuff. It seemed like the perfect place to add the mounted rhino

That's true, that scene is full of character and props, for example, a lion vs a gladiator, a Roman cart in the other side, there is about 4 duel in the same place! It's crazy!

This looks amazing!
Who do I think the winner will be??? Technically nobody, thumbs-down all around XD! But if I'm going to be fair I'm going to say... definitely, without a doubt, unequivocally, indisputably, 100%... the guy in the middle. Anyone remember the first SAW? We all thought that guy was dead too, and look what happened! The opossum technique never fails! We can't see this guy's right arm, so nobody other than our dear Joe here knows what he's hiding. It's the perfect ruse, it even fooled the animals in the arena! Or I'm completely wrong and he's just dead... that would be embarrassing, am I right!?

Thank you, The opossum technique is a very valid technique, just hope that no one comes in and makes sure you are actually dead. If they do I like the "Vulture" self-defense method of throwing up on your attacker and running away

Seems we guys have taken a fancy about arena games! Your rendering is fantastic as always. Your trick to populate the arena works pretty well too. I did not know one might do this with CG. And the DOF to mask the the unwanted details of the crowd is definitely the smartest thing to do! Congrats!

Thank you for all your kindness and encouragement, This experiment is something I have wanted to try for a while now, how could I populate the arena stands without making my computer melt. Then I saw a behind the scene documentary on the "Phantom Menace" and they stated they used different colored Q-tips to make the arena crowd. That got me thinking that if I used the right camera DOF that I could use "M.O.M Crowd Generator" to do the job without having to replace all the panel art. It seems to have worked and it kept the memory low enough that I add more gladiators to the arena floor

This is incredible. This is the kind of thing that shows what can be done in our medium. I have no idea how you manage to create so many of these amazing multi-layered depth compositions but you are the undisputed master of them. Do you mind if I were to feature one or two on my journal? I've done previous features on other artists' work:
Storytelling With Iray: Featuring RawArt3DPreviously I did a journal entry on the elements of a great storytelling render in 3Delight, which you can find here.
A vast majority of artwork rendered in Poser and Daz Studio is either somewhat formalist in the sense that it's still roleplay portraits, or else it's just a series of bad pinups. I have a different article on what makes a better pinup.
It's been a while since I did one of these, but today RawArt3d put up this render.
Visual storytelling is difficult in every medium - comics, animation, renders, painting, sculpting. But there are elements of composition that make it easier, and RawArt is a master of these. As he pointed out to me in the render's comments, a Daz Premier Artist can't alw
How To Do A Great Storytelling Render In 3DelightNot everyone agreed with what I said in the How To Do A Quality Female Pinup journal, but I DID have a major spike in my page traffic the day it went up, so clearly a lot of people read it. Let's do another one!
Today I'm going to talk about a challenging subject for any render engine, although my focus is 3Delight - the storytelling render. More than just a single character looking cool or sexy, this type of scene is meant to suggest a captured moment in time, an instant in the lives of its characters and universe. Above all, it suggests that those characters and that universe have a life beyond this image.
I've done a small number of these that I was happy with in my career as a DAZ Published Artist; but I'm not going to brag on my own work today. No, today I'm going to use the example of a render called
How To Do A Quality Female Pinup In 3DelightI'm not going to give a "bad" example, because a lot of people who do terrible pinups are enthusiastic hobbyists, and there's no reason to hurt their feelings when they're really not trying to do this professionally. Still, one can always do better. The reason I'm going to talk about this is that pinups are a perennial visual topic in our medium, and one that is very often done very badly.
I'm not saying this because I'm a heterosexual female, and not especially girly or fem myself; the human female body as an artistic subject is not offensive to me, nor is the fact that men like to look at pictures of sexy women. I like to look at sexy men, so as far as I'm concerned, all's fair. Here's me doing a male pinup and here's how I did i
Rendering Toons in Iray: Featuring VAlzheimerEvery so often on my blog I do a feature talking about a great render someone else has done, and why I thought it was great. Here are some previous examples.
Being able to see great renders other artists have done both makes me envious and inspires me to improve, and I'd like to share that with all of you. I will be the first to admit that there are many artists that are better at the art and craft of rendering than I am!
Today my subject is VAlzheimer 's "Stop The Noise."
Now what makes this render special isn't just that it's adorable and well-lit. It's that it has a very cartoonish humanoid subject, one of the harder things to pull off in a PBR engine like Iray. On the one hand, you can end up swerving hard into the Uncanny Valley with overly realistic skin shaders on a very unrealistic shape, or on the other, you can end up making everything i
