This is considered to be Ruth's first job.

In the Knikings story, Ruth gets talked to to get a job, and Ruth finds that a liquor store is hiring, and she applies there and immediately gets hired. She had no concept of knowing that it's pretty dangerous where the liquor is located and how ghetto it is. While she works there as a store clerk, she doesn't really hate it nor like it, but is neutral with the customers. Ruth comes across Joey's friends and some other gangsters in the hood (They visit the store often just to check Ruth out).
One time, Ruth is ringing up a customer, where a robber attempts to rob the store. Ruth does not react and questions them. The robber tries to intimate her, but to no avail, Ruth does not give in. Therefore, the robber tries to break into the register, but Ruth breaks their arm and kicks them out, literally. Word spreads on how Ruth stopped a robbery in the liquor store, and that's how people start to be aware about Ruth and her tactics.
Another time, a bigger robber attempts to shoplift some liquor, and Ruth notices and demands them to pay, but they run off. Ruth, with no hesitation, just walks outside and uses her telekinetic powers to pull them back and hold them by the shirt and demands payment or return the liquor. The robber just gives back the liquor and Ruth releases them and they run off scared. This is where the word spreads even more and how people are more aware of Ruth and her powers, as she becomes quite a celebrity in the hood, and Joey gains more respect because Ruth is his girlfriend and they won't want to mess with him or else Ruth would go after them.
