Description
Okay, admittedly, I don't follow the MLP series. HOWEVER, one of my best friends does, and has been bugging me for a while to at least give the EQG movies a shot.So. After finally watching both EQG movies, I figured, "Hmm...this could be a fun project to do..."
And that's how this little animation came about.

Holy shit, that looks like 24 fps... animated on ones. This is fucking incredible.

JoshNg In reply to TheArtrix [2015-03-25 06:48:33 +0000 UTC]
Thanks! It'sΒ 25Β fps on ones, actually.
(I used to do a lot of video work in PAL, so 25fps just became the usual working framerate.)
...come to think of it, I could have saved time by working in 24fps....

TheArtrix In reply to JoshNg [2015-03-25 13:44:18 +0000 UTC]
Traditionally, frame-by-frame animators use 24fps because film, but also because it can be divided in two so that, well, you can animate in ones, twos etc. But it is true that 24fps is kind of antiquated given modern frame rates, and I just wrapped up a project in which I animated at 60fps (which sounds more impressive than it is, tweened animation and all that).
So yea, seeing as this is several seconds of uninterrupted 24fps animation on ones... wow, that is a lot of frames. Respect.

Thanks again
You mean the Daisy's Quest animation? Yeah, if I had to animate at 60fps, I'd be doing cutout animation all the way too. Oh, and I really like your art style, by the way Β
Well, I don't think 24fps is COMPLETELY antiquated, seeing as while modern videogames and cutscenes look great at 60/120fps, movies--for some reason--still seem to look 'just right' at 24fps.Β
....or maybe that's just evolving slower....hmm.
Anyway, take care!

Movies deal with a thing called "motion blurring", which is a phenomenon inherent to the medium. Motion blurring makes the need for additional frames less pressing, since the human eye is already satisfied with a sufficient number of frames. Also, we have been conditioned to accept 24fps as the norm for film, while TV programming has been moving to higher frame rates. This is the "it looks like a TV soap opera" or "looks like a home movie" phenomenon. CGI movies, since they are pre-rendered, incorporate these principals and have no need to up the frame rate for the same reason movies do. Likewise, frame by frame animation tends to stick to 24 fps for purely economical reasons; why add more frames if the public is trained to accept 24fps.
The exception is video games. Video games are, quite obviously, an interactive medium and having a accurate representation of the environment is more important than aesthetics. Video games also have no motion blurring, which makes a low frame rate even more glaring.
And thank you for the compliment.

Real smooth animation, although I'm not at all interested in MLP.
Just curious, though... aside from the fact that both TF and MLP are owned by Hasbro, what does the Decepticon insignia have to do with the movies you mentioned?
