Thomas tells the coaches to come along, but Clarabel didn’t want to come, chanting “I’ve lost my nice guard, I’ve lost my nice guard”, but Thomas was hurrying and wouldn’t listen. Annie and Clarabel try to put on their brakes, but they couldn’t without the guard. In time, they have to stop at a signal, they wait for the guard to tell them what’s wrong, but he doesn’t come, Annie and Clarabel tell Thomas that they’ve left him behind. Just then the driver, fireman and all the passengers look and see the guard running as fast as he could along the line with his flags in one hand and whistle in the other! He was very hot so he sat down and had a drink and told them all about it.Thomas is sorry for forgetting him, but the guard tells him it wasn’t his fault. Just then, the signal drops and everyone climbs back on board and they start again. Annie and Clarabel were so pleased to have their guard again that they sing “As fast as you like, as fast as you like” to Thomas all the way, and they reach the top station quicker than every before.
