Part 8: Favourite Pokemon when you first found out about the Pokemon seriesDedicated to my first LeafGreen starter, Blastoise I and Nuzlocke Blastoise, Bort.
When I first got LeafGreen, I picked Squirtle as my starter because my older cousin back then had raised a Charmander in his FireRed file and I wanted to beat him for once. And so we journeyed through the game, kicking a** and taking names. Then, we reached post-game, and it was only then when I found out that Blastoise was a female... oops. Thought it was a male all that time. Regardless, she was still my team's powerhouse, having Surf, Blizzard, Protect and Hydro Cannon. I remembered using her to take down the team of an old friend of mine from primary school, him having a Blastoise too. Yet, I was never able to beat my cousin, that was because of 3 major reasons. The first was that he was just more experienced and got to tinker more with his team, so he'll almost curb-stomped me whenever we battled... then again, there were legendaries involved too. Second was during my "drought" phase phase, my younger cousin somehow corrupted my save file while playing it while I was studying. Those hours of playing, my team and Blastoise were gone. I was distraught and had a BSOD, I was a temper-prone kid, I didn't hit him or anything, but that did put me in a very terrible mood. But then, there was nothing I could do but go through the game again. To be honest, it was a blessing in disguise, as it got me to touch my Gameboy again and sparked a little interest in Pokemon, if only for that short brief moment, but did gave birth to Furnace I the Charmander who would later be with me even to this day. Third was that by the time I did get a decent working team, my cousin by then had moved on and even now, there is little to no chance of him ever getting back to Pokemon. Even when ORAS was announced, he hesitated in getting a 3DS because he couldn't get motivated to get invested in the games again, not even to the generation that started it all for him. But, I can't blame him for that, he's in his 20s and adult life is the bigger priority, and heck, one day, I may be saying the same words as he is, which I hope not.
Edit: The next paragraph is me suddenly remembering that I have raised another Blastoise.... oops
Then, during my Yellow Nuzlocke, I gotten a Squirtle which I'm 100% sure everyone playing Yellow also had. So, this one was named Bort because I wanted alliterations and was fresh out of watching Brainscratchcomms' Legend of Zelda commentary (In case those who didn't know, they named Link Bort) He ended up staying for the entire play through and really took care of Bruno and Lance. He (No genders, but always saw him as a he) was my team's muscle alongside Charlie. It was always safe whenever I used him considering there isn't much threats that can potentially end his career.
So, after that long chunk of a description, people will probably be wondering why I'm dedicating this to Blastoise I and Bort. Well, can't fault y'all for thinking that. Back then, Blastoise I had been my ace despite having only trained her back when I was 9 to 12, but despite that, I remember having fun going around Kanto with her. She may be gone, but she was the starter that I spent the second longest amount of time with, only losing to Furnace because of the circumstances, and if it wasn't for her "departure", I probably wouldn't have bothered raising Furnace, who would become one of my all-stars. As for Bort, he was cool and a great carrier. All in all, I wouldn't say that those two were one of my tops, but the two still have a place in my heart.
