requested by ~Akastuki-sensei
a tutorial for the automail made for ~bloodyjackfaber 's Ed Elric cosplay

if anything isn't explained in the tutorial [and I tried to cover EVERYTHING... x_x ], feel free to ask any questions. :]

how many bottles of fabric paint did you use?
I believe about 4 silver, 2 black [of the 2-oz size].

download for higher resolution.

if you make automail using this tutorial, please post a link to your finished result! I'd love to see what you made.

1/31/10 EDIT: a DD?! O__O
well, THAT was completely unexpected. . . . but I'm really glad you guys are finding this tutorial helpful! ^^
thanks to all of you~~and especially to `Hanratty-Stock & ^Nyiana-Sama !!

Anime Detour 2011 edit: BJ was wearing her automail glove [the same one featured in this tutorial] around Detour this year, and a random passerby said to their friend--"look! it's like the tutorial online!" xD
Amusing as this was, it was a little weird to have someone recognize our automail-glove design from a dA post I made now-years ago. o_o;;

Would it also work to just get a long white sleeve, sew on just a wrist-long glove, and after painting, cut the sleeve off of the white shirt, and sew it onto a black tank top? Or.. Clip it on.. if you want to use the tanktop for other shizz too...??

The long white sleeve sewed to a wrist-long glove would definitely work.
I think sewing the sleeve to a tank top would also work, and you could give it a shot to find out.
However, one thing I do like about having an entire automail shirt [minus a sleeve on one side] is that you can have the automail showing under the tank--around the neck area, behind the shoulder blade, or on the inside of the tank's strap...areas that wouldn't be covered if the automail ended at the tank strap.

I saw that as a possible let down too. However, you Could still sew it to the tank top, while also making sure that you cut it/hem it so that the automail is shown sticking out of the tanktop too. I'll have to give it a try once I get some money for random things ^^

Yup, you could definitely go for that. ^^ Once you've got it made, would you be willing to post pictures? It'd be cool to see how it turned out.

You can always try a combination of cardboard and sleeve-glove, too. Work the bits together to see what works best for you? ^^

Im sorry. That may look good from a distance, but once somebody get close to you its really going to look bad. Put some effort into your cosplay. Make the upper arm and forearm out of styrene or sintra. Make the hand and shoulder out of grey/silver pleather. Use metal snaps for the bolts on the nuckles. Use jean rivets for the bolts on the palm and top of your hand. And if you really want to be technial, the little square cutouts on the fingers... are on the bottom of the individual finger pieces... not the tops. Ive made an arm using this method and sold it for a really good price. Im currently working on one for me so if you want to see what the automail will look like using this method check my page in a few weeks for a picture.

k-ee-ran In reply to legionangel04 [2010-11-10 02:21:18 +0000 UTC]

I appreciate your trying to help, but usually using phrases like "put some effort into ___" when a person has put many long hours of work (and longer days of planning) into a project usually isn't the best way to get someone to listen. If you like your way of doing automail, that's great! I'm glad you found something that works with you.

If you wanted, I could send you some close-up shots of the painted automail so you could better see its detail work, but I don't think that would change your mind, anyway. Good luck with your project! :]

One final note. Using those materials for the arm is still cheap.

Thank you very much! I think I will find this more than useful when starting my Lanfan's cosplay ^^ Though I thinl her's a more difficult automail! XD

k-ee-ran In reply to SerenaMLupin [2010-11-10 02:16:32 +0000 UTC]

You could use a glove base for Lanfan, but I recommend using some kind of cardboard, wonderflex, or other three-dimensional material for her spike coming off the elbow. ^^
