Description O Gods have mercy, it’s Sirens, Captain! For an assignment in Illustration, we’re doing a set of monster trading cards.

For once my scanner didn’t erase most of the shadows that I really felt were necessary to the piece, whew, what a relief. I actually didn’t glue down a lot of elements, so that they stand out from the background more and give the piece more depth. It’s an unreliable system, though, since it makes it more fragile, the depth isn’t fixed since they wobble around, and scanning…. pretty much kills the whole idea. I need a better solution for that, hmm…

Anyway! Sirens! Yeah! I know my sirens aren’t particularly scary (or beautiful, but then again in the original myth they weren’t) but I just don’t see them as a scary monster. They’re really rather ironic, the poor things… In some origin myths they were sent to call for Persephone when Hades kidnapped her, but obviously failed utterly. So in that light they’re almost like… like a Steven Moffat Doctor Who monster, not the malevolent ones, the neutral ones like in The Empty Child and Girl In The Fireplace. Not malicious beings, just programs doing their job a little too literally.
