No one had ever called Ledger beautiful. Aside from inheriting his dam's long face and neck he was remarkably unremarkable, neither standing out nor blending in in a crowd. He also did not heavily stamp his foals in his image, instead they tended to resemble horses further back on either side of their pedigree: most notably Moole, color notwithstanding, was a dead ringer for Ledger's own grandsire, a purebred Irish Draught.
Ledger himself heavily resembled the old-world type British Thoroughbreds used in the foundation of many warmblood breeds. He resembled painted portraits of stretched out Thoroughbreds with their stumpy little tails, the horses who pulled carts to church on Sundays and foxhunted with their owners when they weren't plowing the fields.
It was fascinating that a horse as unremarkable as him had founded a jumping dynasty and one of the most successful stallion lines in the world. While Ledger had had his own success in the ring a series of mild setbacks had kept him from success at Vechnyy, the only show he'd attended being a Tandem Puissance class more than a year after his purchase.
Though it was disappointing that they hadn't had more success with him yet it wasn't the stallions own fault, while he had been trained and competed as a Puissance horse with his breeder, Dilettante Stables, he had been sold several times in quick succession and found himself out of work for many years, finally coming up for sale advertised as a possible carriage horse of all things. The staff had outright panicked after accidentally stumbling upon the ad and put down an offer of $200,000 with no second thoughts, nevermind that he was offered to someone else for $10,000, and the thrill of owning him had yet to wear off.
Ledger himself was a hard ride, for a horse that preferred to deal with one rider he had changed hands too many times to count and had soured towards work, bolting every time someone approached him with a halter. It had taken years and thousands of treats to get him to get him to... tolerate? Training? He very debatably enjoyed it, certainly not in the way that his son very clearly had the time of his life but Ledger definitely perked up when he saw jumps.
Keke was the first to admit he had almost ruined the stallion when he first got him. The excitement of owning such a legendary horse had gotten to the man and he had set his sights on the stars, not realizing that Ledger was in no condition to perform to the standards expected of him. It had taken several years to return the horse to prime condition and always on Ledger's own terms, a concept Keke hoped would set him up for long term success.
At nearly 15 years old it seemed like he was finally mentally ready to return to the show ring. To play it safe they had returned to the scene of his very first show with Vechnyy, Golden Vale's New York location. Though Sugaa would be entering the regular Puissance class Bareback Puissance was wide open and it was all Keke could do to repay Golden Vale for the chaos they had inflicted upon him by lending him his working student, Jordan.
