Description EDIT: This is still getting s but it would be nice to know of anyone actually using this! - gimmie a link if you make an animation using this as reference will ya? I'm interested to see ...also, it'd be great if you linked back to this tutorial so that other people can benefit from it too! ^-^
-----------------------------------
my good friend Cerzz has started to dabble in the wonderful and pain-staking world of animation! So far she's been lookin' mostly at dogs, so I quickly knocked up some thumbnails and threw together this tutorial to try and explain a few things. It only took an hour to put together, so it's not meant to be any conclusive lesson in making the perfect run cycle, more that it's simply intended to illustrate a few things which aren't easy to explain in words. I figured I'd post it up here in case anyone else finds it useful!

I suggest using this only as a guide, as you can see the animation itself is basic and by no means flawless!! the animation should loop automatically (if not, right click, loop) and if it's too small to read any of the text, right click, zoom in.
my tutors would screw if they knew I was workin' on this instead of my school work lol! ... me go bed now

Hope it helps Cerrz

Hey great to hear (although I'm sorry you're struggling to w/getting it into a DA format) ... what program are you using? .. DA supports flash SWFs and GIFs I believe.
Thanks for the comment, I'm glad it was useful.

I have a very stupid-amature question,
what program(s) are/is used 2 animate?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

KatCardy In reply to WingedWolfGirl [2010-07-07 19:16:08 +0000 UTC]

hey that's not a stupid question at all! in fact, it's a perfectly good one! - This was animated on Adobe Flash, but if you want to animate pencil drawings you're better off using something else. - Flash is better for drawing straight into the computer.

WingedWolfGirl In reply to KatCardy [2010-07-12 01:18:02 +0000 UTC]

Thank you!!!
I'd better learn to draw with a computer, or do more research it seems.

KatCardy In reply to WingedWolfGirl [2010-07-12 08:42:38 +0000 UTC]

well it's more than possible to animate by hand, that's how I was trained and that's how it was done for years, but it means scanning in lots of drawings when you come to put them together... it's fine for short animations (like run cycles I suppose!) but for longer scenes it can be very time consuming! .. mind you, animation all over is very time consuming!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

WingedWolfGirl In reply to KatCardy [2010-07-12 14:58:22 +0000 UTC]

I don't exactly know this (having never done it myself), but that is what I've heard.
Creating a drawing is time consuming in itself; I would imagine multiple frames wouldn't be any easier.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

KatCardy In reply to WingedWolfGirl [2010-07-12 16:58:13 +0000 UTC]

yeah, that's very true! you basically have to multiply your time by how many frames you draw! ... hehe.. gotta learn to draw pretty fast if you wanna get any longer animations done. - there's lots of good books and tutorials on it around though, I'm sure you'll have fun if you give it a go!

No problem! - Let me know if you need a great introduction to animation.. there was a book that they made us get when I studied it at uni and it was really useful!
take care! x

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

KatCardy In reply to wolflover35719 [2010-07-07 19:17:12 +0000 UTC]

drawing lots of pictures that look similar but are actually slightly different and then putting them in order! - This one was done using a program called Flash, but there are plenty of other ways of animating too

hey, thanks for that. Yeah I'm very familiar with the book, we used to use it as a reference all the time back when I took my animation degree, so it's no surprise really that this should look similar! :]

your best bet is to find some reference footage and look at that in slow-motion... it's very unlikely that I'll be making any-more animation tutorials any-time soon
