Description
I realized I never had an updated sheet of her up here. The character sheet of her in the gallery is ancient. So im uploading this. (had to adjust the colors so it looked OK on web. So it should look decent in the browser but not in photoshop). My grasp on anatomy has really improved in the last few years. If you'd like to compare this to the old image of her, it's [link] . I find it fitting that drawings from the past looked puppy-like. They all look much more adult now as I improve!
In other news, the comic will be published on Nov. 14. Erin and I will be selling signed issues at Furfest (www.furfest.org) along with figures.
More details regarding online sales of the comic will be posted once I hammer out details.

This ref looks much better than the old one, since she looks much more like an adult now, like you said. The colors are off to me though, but it's probably the monitor haha. Mind you, I'm comparing to my figurine haha xD
[i'm srsly in love with that figurine i swear xD]

well this came just in time, admittedly i had a little trouble finding a nice concise reference for swifty to work off. love the somewhat foxy look if that makes me a tad guilty xD, very helpful piece (with regard to everything being discussed here of course).

Excellent color choices and form. As if you didn't hear that enough hah! Do you read through all your comments?

We're self-published, we were approached by a professional publisher but the usual content of their products would've conflicted with how we present the BBA. So we opted for self-publishing instead.

There's a few independent comic printers you can contact (we were gonna use Comix press, but they've been iffy getting back to us and they had some sort of printer meltdown, held everything up, so we're using TGI Direct now).

I wouldn't know, I don't do business in Canada (beyond individuals hiring me for artwork, but then country has nothing to do with it).

Study real life and draw inspiration from it and other artists, and not just artists that work in the same subject as you. Abstraction, mixed media, oil, people, cats, water, or planets. There's so much to learn.

Actually, I believe you draw her a little thicker in the comic than here, with a slightly more rectangular, deeper chest and the tail better fleshed out (she looks a little more dire-wolfy that way). Are you trying to make her look more feminine, as someone suggested?

KayFedewa In reply to FablePaint [2007-10-26 02:23:54 +0000 UTC]
Yes, a little bit. I dont want her to look GIRLY, but I kindof want it apparent that shes female

So here you can see there's now a distinctive difference between the male and female without sacrificing their inherent wolfy-ness (by exaggerating the tuck-up too much) and it's also eye-pleasing and you can maintain your style. Also, a brief sketch suggesting how to construct a tail without making it too flat while keeping the fluffiness, an concept I borrowed from Shaddie.

But I liiikkee her tail
We'll do that other ones that way - but swift has ALWAYS has a flat top of her tail and fluffy underside. I dont know why but it's how I designed her - even in the original sheet!

FablePaint In reply to KayFedewa [2007-10-26 03:01:21 +0000 UTC]
From our convo on the phone, I'll go ahead and do that. I also see where you coming from experimenting with Swifty's cheek fur. I'm always impressed by how everytime you redraw these guys, they get more and more distinctive. Makes me wonder what the BBA will look like by Issue 10.
And Riptide is totally awesome!

FablePaint In reply to KayFedewa [2007-10-26 02:42:42 +0000 UTC]
Would you mind if I did a little redline on the tail, to show how you could keep that flat top/fluffy bottom look while making it look more dimensional? Also, my apologies for not mentioning this before, I love her head and how you've incorporated the "eyebrows" into the markings.

You could make male paws and nostrils slightly bigger, and them fairly hairier, to reflect some of our ingrained primate notions of what constitutes male. I think she's beginning to tread on Nightrun's body-type too much here, though. Or you could achieve an even happier medium by making her less broad across the front, giving her a slim look without sucking in her stomach too much. I'll make a sketch to exemplify this, give me a minute

FablePaint In reply to KayFedewa [2007-10-26 02:38:32 +0000 UTC]
I'd also point out I do like her old style, and you could conceivably keep that as the yearling/juvenile version of Swiftkill, maybe make it even leggier.

PhantomSeeker In reply to ??? [2007-10-26 02:05:43 +0000 UTC]
It is certainly an improvement, but I don't think it truly epitomizes what wolf (or dire wolf?) anatomy is supposed to portray. A wolf would be horribly emaciated if he/she were that skinny, having deep chests and a stocky build (their ancient varients even more so, I'm assuming). Another perhaps-not-so glaring anatomical stylization that I think needs to be pointed out is the tail. Wolves, though expressive, have reletively short, static tails, not usually bending like a spitz-like dog, which Swiftkill has in this picture.
I understand you probably want to make your characters look more like their chosen gender, but subtle changes can probably do this more than what you've done in response by over-stylizing without knowing the underlying structure of the REAL animal. I will give you props for improving for vastly, however.

Hi
Though she is a direwolf, I find real direwolves quite ugly. I choose to stylize my characters so that they're more visusally appealing to me.
Also, Swift just has a bit of a curved tail. It's just how I choose to draw. I suppose if I was going for realism and accuracy, I wouldnt be drawing unrealistically-colored & marked cartoon dogs that talked
Thanks for coming by!
