Oh, goodness. The smugface. It's not inherently a bad expression, but its recent use in animation - and the personality equivalent for character design in general - has really diluted its meaning. Especially when you go down the Jack Sparrow route where the character's confidence turns on a dime depending on the situation. It's supposed to show that the character puts on a tough front to impress people, but is human like anybody else and has his or her own insecurity and fears the worst possible outcome like anyone else. In execution, it gets to be painfully formulaic and the character is defined more by their tendency to overreact rather than any content of their character - See: Jack Spicer from Xiaolin Showdown.
I remember back in the heyday of sprite comics, where an equivalent was the unamused expression. Every character was either relegated to the cynic pile or the comic relief pile. That's what happens when a medium is saturated with youth obsessed with seeing established norms undermined and translate that obsession into an outlook of playing the devil's advocate. What was I talking about, again?

That disease would actually be pretty scary. Only being able to look smug no matter how you feel so that even when you're trying to show that your feeling sad or sorry you still look smug and therefor causes people to not feel sympathetic towards you. Some fates truly are worse then death

Smugface afflicts over 100 cartoon characters per week, but nobody likes to talk about it. People, be aware of smugface before it's too late. The more you know. ^_^

It's the very first symptom of long term Webcomic Main Character Syndrome. You should get that checked, man.

What's worse about FF7 is that they started the trend of "Pretty boys" & the Tom Boy-Girls. It's going to get so bad that you wont be able to tell if it is Hot Chick or a Dude. Talk about identity crisis!
