THE CONCUBINE (THE FACE OF ‘IN THE TIME OF THE JUDGES’)
-oilgraph on wooden panel // 16”x20”-
It was originally shot as a makeup test, but it captured something that I can’t unsee. It’s beautiful in it’s bleak reality. Played by my friend Nina, she fully embodied this unnamed woman who in her death revealed the depth to which Israel had fallen in those days. The story is found in Judges 19.

Even without the story the power of this image is irrepressible
But, as it relates to the story, or tells...it is perfection, Kevin

This work has a very strong and emotive aura to me.
Without knowing the background story, it triggers feelings of sadness, suffering and resignation. But also compassion, an urge to reach out and help to end this.
Timeless.
Great work.

I like your statement, "can't unsee." Isn't that one of the qualities of the best of art? I fear she is an all too modern truth too, as well as in the time of the Judges.

Indeed so. I woman used, misused, abused, and finally sacrificed on the altar of degraded hospitality.
