By popular request on my polls, here's a walkthrough of the Jak and Daxter, Forbidden Jungle picture I did a while back.

This is pretty much how I work from start to finish on more detailed images. Ones with less going on have a more basic approach to them. :3

Media Used (in order):
* Eno Colour Graphite leads
* HB Pencil
* Mitsubishi Uni Pin Inking pens
* Faber Castell Inking pen
* Copic Sketch Markers
* Tria Markers
* Pro Markers
* PrismaColor Markers
* Colleen Coloured Pencils
* Faber Castell Dry Watercolours
* Students Gouache
* Polychrome coloured pencils.

I love this.
You have a wonderful technique, and you provide a lot of useful tips in almost every step (like the thing with brush tips and the light box window).
My only problem/question is the expense of the coloring materials.
I know the paper and watercolors and colored pencils could be relatively cheap, but I know for a fact that Prismacolor markers are insanely expensive.
Do you have a supplier or something so you get a discount on the nice markers, or do you have to pay full price?

KeyshaKitty In reply to 0ArmoredSoul0 [2009-11-28 03:04:32 +0000 UTC]

Actually, of all the brands of markers I use (I use about 5 different, professional brands) Prismacolor are the cheapest. XD

I get MOST of my markers in New Zealand from an art supply store who give good discounts (most of all the start of the year, they always have a marker sale). Copics I get in HK for a good price as they pay less on imports from Japan than other countries. I also buy refils for brands like Tria and Copic, which save LOTS of money over time rather than buying a new marker every time one colour runs out.

I've also been very lucky because Letraset have given me supplies in the past too - but most of it really comes down to the fact that I've been using markers since 2003, so my collection's just grown over time. :3

i just have to ask... how much does ur art set cost all to gether...? i know that the big case with markers (i think) costs around 10 pounds.... (if it is the same case as i saw when i was on a shopping spree in London... though i wish i had bouht it coz them it was 50% of... )

KeyshaKitty In reply to Quco [2009-11-27 18:32:01 +0000 UTC]

What 'big case of markers'? XD The black wallet with 24 of them is a Tria set that usually costs about 72 pounds [link] (though the ones you saw could have been the old range, without the brush tip).

I honestly wouldn't know the price overall, as I've been collecting markers to use since 2003. X3 Not to mention I bought all of mine in NZ$

8 frames downward to the left in the top of the image...
and 72 pounds? huh...
aaand... no, its not the same one as i saw...

KeyshaKitty In reply to Quco [2009-11-28 02:55:06 +0000 UTC]

Yup. Tria are pricy but well worth the cost - most of all since they can also be refilled (like copics) so if you buy a refil pack, you save a lot of money in the long run.

Oh my gosh. I've always wanted to use a lightbox but was never able to get one; that tip about the window really helped a lot.

Also, I had a question: on the part where you were showing coloring Jak's hair, do you wait for the marker ink to dry on the page before using the next shade?

Otherwise it was an awesome tutorial, I learned a lot.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

KeyshaKitty In reply to AkiraXKiraxa [2009-11-27 17:59:52 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, I'm currently in a different country to my lovely, big lightbox back home - so even the picture in this tutorial I had to use a window for. X3 I can't wait to get back to my lightbox!

As for the question - yes and no. The first part where I was adding different shades of green and yellow, they dried very quickly and I was layering over dried marker. For the final part where I go over - the areas were the yellow and green merge were wet when I did to enable them to blend better. :3

Thank you for the lovely tutorial. It really put some insight into your process, and it helped me some when it came to colors, inking, and lighting in general. But, I am afraid to bother you with one question
Why does a A4 sheet of card paper work so well with mixed mediums? Or rather, does this paper work with any other mediums, besides the one you used?
Again, thanks for creating this!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

KeyshaKitty In reply to daydreamsinc [2009-11-27 17:36:42 +0000 UTC]

A4 has nothing to do with the meidums. :3 A4 is just the size - it's the GSM that's better to take into mind. I usually use one with 200+ gsm because it's strong to hold wet mediums like marker and paint with less bleeding. :3

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

daydreamsinc In reply to KeyshaKitty [2009-11-27 17:43:45 +0000 UTC]

So the A4 for appropriate size with 200+ gsm is what keeps it from bleeding. Alright then, thanks for the help! C:

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

KeyshaKitty In reply to daydreamsinc [2009-11-27 17:45:43 +0000 UTC]

Like I said, A4 is just the size, and size doesn't really matter - though if you want to do something very detailed A4 would probably be the smallest size to work with - bigger gives you even more space, A4's just the size I work with.

Also, 200gsm doesn't guarantee no bleed at all, keep in mind, but the stronger can (most of the time) be the better.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

daydreamsinc In reply to KeyshaKitty [2009-11-27 17:50:34 +0000 UTC]

I'm guessing that A4 size fits on the average scanner, right? And scanning an image is so much easier than taking a picture of it with a digital camera, but you probably knew that already.

Most of the time? (Look out, another question) When would the stronger gsm not be better?

KeyshaKitty In reply to daydreamsinc [2009-11-27 17:51:44 +0000 UTC]

When you're doing rough sketches. X3 It's a waste since it usually costs more.

Aah, thank you very much for this lovely tutorial! It's obvious how much effort you put into both the detail of the tutorial and the (gorgeous) picture itself. ^__^ Although I don't work much with paint or markers (afraid to mess up, I think), the techniques you described in this could be applied to many types of art.

You know, I think my camera has enough GBs on it to record stuff in parts. I'd try using my computer but I can't do it here in HK with lack of space. Need my desk back in NZ for that!

I DID have a sped-up version of myself sketching Zuri that was part of my IP several years back, but I lost it when my old portable HD corrupted. XO

I did it once, put it on youtube, too...but both mysteriously got deleted. *Sobs* ALL THAT TIME WASTED!!! D8

I just bought one of the newest model of HD camera, coincidentaly...SO YOU COULD DO IT IN HD! 8D

I feel your paid with loosing data. IT SUCKS.
