Yes, it may or may not have the airbrush tool, but other than that, go for it!

I love this tut! I love the software too! I just downloaded it. I don't suppose you could answer me this. As you said "Open Canvas has sharper lines than photoshop.". That's why I love it so! But is there I can make it more like the inking line drawing tool thing lin FLASH? Where is comes out almost rendered and slick, or is that not possible in this software? *Sad Panda Face*

Glad you like it ^^ Yes, Open Canvas does have sharper lines, which is great.
From what I've seen, those kind of lines are not achievable on Open Canvas, like those in Flash. I think only Photo Shop can get close to it.

uhh, did u just use the mouse to draw the cat? if so, then how can you possibly get lines that smooth?

koisnake In reply to Limelight-Night [2008-07-02 18:34:21 +0000 UTC]

At the time, I did not own a tablet, so I did use a mouse.

Its just practice, and keep your hand steady, and try moving your entire arm to make the curves. A good place to practice is MS Paint

umm, another thing, whats a tablet? xD

koisnake In reply to Limelight-Night [2008-07-03 20:05:50 +0000 UTC]

A tablet is a special device. It consists of a 'board' and a pen like device. You simply use the pen and draw on the board and whatever you draw on the board, comes on the computer. Its an awesome invention and many artists use it.

They come in many sizes, colors and shape but all do the same.

thankies! you know I was thinking like, "how do they draw that neat with a mouse? they should make like a pad with a touch pen!" and gee, what do ya know, they do have that XD

Your very welcome! I've taught myself how to draw smoothly with a mouse but having a tablet around makes the job quicker and easier.

I have a quick question: a lot of people are refering to the tern "open canvas" as a coloring style. What is it exactly and how is it different from the other coloring styles?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

koisnake In reply to KinatsuHashido [2008-06-21 17:04:14 +0000 UTC]

Open Canvas has sharper lines than photoshop. People like the air brush tool better than photoshop's. Now, I prefer photoshop, but OC is a very excellent coloring source. May people, including *hibikio and ~SpeedBlitz99 use it very well.

this really helped a lot but i am having trouble with the program..=[
i downloaded it and it worked great for about a night and now it wont save any of my stuff. ???? it keeps saying "bad status:failed to save file"

i want to get the full version but not if it will be a waste of my money! do you know whats wrong? *thanks

koisnake In reply to renjilove [2008-06-15 16:21:05 +0000 UTC]

That happened to me sometimes. If that happens, you can copy the screen if the picture is done and paste it into Ms.Paint. Did you try rebooting it?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

renjilove In reply to koisnake [2008-06-15 17:04:08 +0000 UTC]

yeah i did. it still wouldnt let me save anything. i tried a new picture and everything. if i buy the full version do you think that will happen? cause i am planning on it as long as it is reliable.

Nice tutorial with clear, well explained steps. Thanks for making it!

I was wondering though, when I open a jpg image of a hand drawn sketch and then later save it, it becomes an oci image. How do I convert it back to jpg when I'm done using Open Canvas with it?

Thanks!

what version do you have? and did you pay for it >👍: 0 ⏩: 1

koisnake In reply to mcrwolf [2007-12-07 18:44:36 +0000 UTC]

I use Open Canvas v3.03E or Open Canvas v3.05E. Or something higher, I need to check. I downloaded it for free, but it was a trial. When the trial is over, you can still draw on it but can't save. I just copied the screen when I was done x3 But now I have the full version.
Theres a free version, Open Canvas version 1 or 2 at the fanclub. Look in their journal and find the link, it should be easy to find ^^

you know, when you use the magic wand tool you can just color over the white spots right? it's quicker than using the mouse and has the same effect.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

koisnake In reply to eintreten [2007-09-04 23:41:04 +0000 UTC]

Yes, you can do that :3
I've made this tutorial a VERY long time ago, when I was a beginner myself. Now, I know that you can do something even BETTER then coloring the white spots.

Its called the "Expand" tool.

I get everything you did on this tutorial there except the layer thing I'm pretty new to digital and I have no idea about these layer thingies. If I got it right these layers are something like you have a pic on a paper and a new layer would be like a new paper over the old one only transparent or something if you get what I'm saying Could you tell me a bit more about them please

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

koisnake In reply to Manchy007 [2007-07-01 00:02:01 +0000 UTC]

Layers are your friend For example, you have 4 layers. One for the sketch, one for the outline, one for the coloring and one for shading. Why would you do this? Well, first of all, if you mess up on coloring, you can choose that layer and you can erase it w/h messing up the outline and sketch.

When your done with your sketch, you create a new layer for outling. When your done with the outline, you close the sketch layer and the outline will only be seen. Next, create a new layer for coloring. You make it a "Multiply" layer. Why? Because you make it this, when you color, it will not mess up the outline. Next, create another for shading and again, a multiply layer. The cool thing is you grab the same color of the coloring and start to shade, by making the shade layer a multiply layer, your shading will be darker than the color, which is perfect.

Hope that helps. If you need anything, just call.

Manchy007 In reply to koisnake [2007-07-01 09:55:00 +0000 UTC]

Hm... it helped a lot So the layer you have for colouring - you can also use the bucket fill for colouring

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

koisnake In reply to Manchy007 [2007-07-01 19:46:58 +0000 UTC]

Well, yes but like I said in my tutorial, it will leave nasty white marks around the outline. When you hand color it, it will make it more nice. Look at the "Step 3 : Coloring" part in my tutorial. The magic wand is the same like bucket fill. There will be two examples of coloring, mouse and bucket fill.
