Description Son of Poseidon and the Nymph Thoosa.
Second-generation Cyclops.
Polyphemus, in Greek mythology, was a cyclops, son of Poseidon and the nymph Thoosa, lived a solitary existence in a cave near Sicily (next to Etna), taking care of sheep.
His life is cut short when Odysseus and his men land in the land of the Cyclopes looking for food during their journey home from Troy. Odysseus and his companions entered Polyphemus' den looking for food and drink, not knowing that it was the place where the Cyclops slept and kept his sheep.
When Polyphemus returns, he closes the cave with a huge rock, trapping the sailors. Panting, facing the figure of the one-eyed giant in the middle of their foreheads, they reveal his presence. The Cyclops grabs two men and devours them. After blocking the entrance to the cave with a massive boulder, Polyphemus continues to devour two men at a time.
Odysseus then devises a plan for everyone to escape and offers wine to Polyphemus, who asks who offers him the drink, to which Odysseus replies, "It was Nobody".
When Polyphemus falls asleep from drinking, Odysseus and his men sharpen a stick and stab it in the Cyclops' eye, blinding him.
The next day, Polyphemus opens the cave to let out the sheep, checking with tact if they are really sheep or prisoners. But these hide, holding on to the sheep, managing to escape. Polyphemus, realizing the escape, shouts that "No one had blinded him" to his fellow Cyclopes, but they ignore him.
Already in his ship Odysseus mocks Polyphemus and reveals his name (he shouts that it was not "Nobody" who hurt him, but Odysseus). Polyphemus, furious, throws large rocks at random into the sea, which almost hit the vessel.
The Cyclops asks his father Poseidon to take revenge on Odysseus, cursing the Greeks. Poseidon answers, tormenting Odysseus for the rest of the trip.
