Description
A tail is a characteristic that I feel clearly represents the majority of the animal kingdom. With few exceptions, nearly all other creatures have a tail in one form or another. Developmentally, all human embryos have tails which, for the vast majority of the population, are gone by birth.I consider the back and spine to be one of the most aesthetically beautiful parts of the human body. In this piece, I tried to preserve that beauty despite the obvious addition of a tail. This piece was an experiment. When I took the stock photo, I immediately knew what I wanted to do with it. It took me several months, however, to muster up enough patience and time to sit down and try to build a tail. I had initially set out to build a thick, reptilian-style tail but as I drew the initial shape, I felt a smaller, thinner mammalian style tail would blend in more naturally with the model's physique. The most difficult part was matching the lighting but I feel like it ended up looking pretty naturalβ¦for a tail anyway.
I also pointed the model's ear and made other minor modifications. Expect minor revisions.
Manipulated with Photoshop 7.0.
Stock photography from my personal collection.
***Update***
Several people have pointed out that the tail was positioned too high on the model's back. This is something that I was aware of when I posted the image. My rationale, other than the fact that this image is an experiment, was that clothing covers the actual end of the model's spine, where a tail would sprout. Despite this, however, I have managed to lower the tail as much as possible and am overall pleased with the results.

Well, that's what I think we'd look like anyway. It's kind of creepy looking actually. It'd suck to wake up and find that you'd grown a tail overnight.
Thanks for the comment!

Wow!! This is SO cool!!
I write fanfiction and one of the first large scale stories that I wrote was about an experiment on a young mutant girl. Yes this was a X-Men fic. The bad experiment people surgically implanted a cat-like tail onto the bottom of her spine. And your picture looks amazingly similar to the picture I had of it in my head. Only hers was a couple feet longer and had dark red hair covering it.
Regardless, it is so cool to see something I saw in my head for so long, realistically put in front of me. Thanks for this opportunity.

Thank you!
It seems we have similar view of what a person with a tail would look like.

Actually, the embryonic 'tail' becomes something important in each person, it is not lost, I forget what that something is though... As for our coccyx, or tail-bone, this is not a vestigial structure. There are no less than nine muscles which attach to it, and those muscles perform some extremely valuable functions which you WOULD certainly miss. Like the inability to reproduce or eliminate waste.

by any chance have you read the book 'geek love' by katherine dunn?
if not, i think, based on your gallery, you'd really enjoy it
first of all, its absolutely wonderful if you're into old freak-show stuff//deformities//anticipated and adored deformities.
second. one of the characters is born with a tail similar to that and it just reminded me of it.
very nice execution all the same; goodjob
