Description
A tail is a characteristic that I feel clearly represents the majority of the animal kingdom. With few exceptions, nearly all other creatures have a tail in one form or another. Developmentally, all human embryos have tails which, for the vast majority of the population, are gone by birth.I consider the back and spine to be one of the most aesthetically beautiful parts of the human body. In this piece, I tried to preserve that beauty despite the obvious addition of a tail. This piece was an experiment. When I took the stock photo, I immediately knew what I wanted to do with it. It took me several months, however, to muster up enough patience and time to sit down and try to build a tail. I had initially set out to build a thick, reptilian-style tail but as I drew the initial shape, I felt a smaller, thinner mammalian style tail would blend in more naturally with the model's physique. The most difficult part was matching the lighting but I feel like it ended up looking pretty naturalβ¦for a tail anyway.
I also pointed the model's ear and made other minor modifications. Expect minor revisions.
Manipulated with Photoshop 7.0.
Stock photography from my personal collection.
***Update***
Several people have pointed out that the tail was positioned too high on the model's back. This is something that I was aware of when I posted the image. My rationale, other than the fact that this image is an experiment, was that clothing covers the actual end of the model's spine, where a tail would sprout. Despite this, however, I have managed to lower the tail as much as possible and am overall pleased with the results.

That is to say, 95% of all animals do not have tails. 95% of all animals don't have spines.

While I love this picture to my core, I have to point out that you are absolutely dead wrong about nearly every creature having a tail. Vertebrates only account for 5% of the life on earth. 95% of all life on earth does not have a tail.

Beautiful. I think you've done one of the best jobs of showing what a human with a tail might look like, and made it aesthetic as well. Have you considered doing more along this line?

Truly beautiful, I love seeing photo's like this. Without the spine life cannot function, not enough people see it's beauty.

Interesting. I guess you know that if you look on the net you will find humans who are born with these things. There are quite a few males with tail remnants in India but photos are difficult to come by.

Very nice looks real, I am always looking for animal/human hybrid art of some kind, which is very hard to find if you want something that doesn't look like a cartoon, or is of a creature with an animal head and fuzzy or scaly human like body, I am doing a book series centered on a planet with animal/human hybrids and I have been looking for good images of such, I typed in everything I could think of into Yahoo and Bing images area and kept getting the same junk, cartoonish stuff or animal heads on human bodies, which is okay for part of my story but I need ones that are a little more human then animal in their face but no one seems to do that, I finally typed in Anthro thinking that would lead me in the right direction but so far not so much, its better then any of the other things I tried but I am still finding mostly toonie stuff or too animal like stuff, I guess I will have to stick more with my imagination instead, lol, but your stuff is helpful.

Brilliant work, this. It's the only image I've seen that really captures what a human might look like with a tail.
I actually found it on another site, and fortunately the watermark lead me here.

good job. i agree with what you say about the tail... but with anthromorphic-style things it's a pain to get clothes to conform to tails...
you handed that well...
would it be possible to use the liquify tool to lower the underwear to a levell where it may appear that the tail has pushed it down? but, i'm nowhere near your levell on manipulations so it may not be effective enough

Personally, I've always kind of wished that I had a tail. Prehensile or not, it would just be kind of cool.
