Description
A tail is a characteristic that I feel clearly represents the majority of the animal kingdom. With few exceptions, nearly all other creatures have a tail in one form or another. Developmentally, all human embryos have tails which, for the vast majority of the population, are gone by birth.I consider the back and spine to be one of the most aesthetically beautiful parts of the human body. In this piece, I tried to preserve that beauty despite the obvious addition of a tail. This piece was an experiment. When I took the stock photo, I immediately knew what I wanted to do with it. It took me several months, however, to muster up enough patience and time to sit down and try to build a tail. I had initially set out to build a thick, reptilian-style tail but as I drew the initial shape, I felt a smaller, thinner mammalian style tail would blend in more naturally with the model's physique. The most difficult part was matching the lighting but I feel like it ended up looking pretty naturalβ¦for a tail anyway.
I also pointed the model's ear and made other minor modifications. Expect minor revisions.
Manipulated with Photoshop 7.0.
Stock photography from my personal collection.
***Update***
Several people have pointed out that the tail was positioned too high on the model's back. This is something that I was aware of when I posted the image. My rationale, other than the fact that this image is an experiment, was that clothing covers the actual end of the model's spine, where a tail would sprout. Despite this, however, I have managed to lower the tail as much as possible and am overall pleased with the results.
Please Full-view...you'll miss detail if you don't!

wouldn't the tail be further down where the tail bone is?

Now this is a beautiful piece. You always have really nice work, but for some reason, it was always missing something. This picture, has that one thing. Great work

Outstanding work. I love the look of it. You definately captured the changes that happen to the anatomy in a scientific and visually pleasing method. It is all too common to see the changes done to the face of a subject. I find it much more interesting to see different body parts change (feet, hands, tails, etc.). I can't wait to see where you go from here.

Thank you!
I try to capture transformation using both aesthetic and scientific aspects.
Faces can get boring...I prefer including something...usually feet or hands along with a face. Makes it different.

i love the intelligent and scientific thought that goes behind each of your peices. i know i say stuff like that a lot, but i really do think that's what alot of art lacks and what makes your art so good.
i agree about the human back, i find it to be one of the (few) things asthetically pleasing on our species. i think however that the actual internal frame of the back is even more attractive.
but if i may critique something, i do think that the begining of the tail is a little to far up. it looks like it's comming off the mid lumbar region instead of a continuation of the coccyx. the shadding and the slight wrinkleing however i think is a very nice touch.

I'm glad you like the htought that goes behind each image. Not that many people care.
I have a zoology/biology background so that helps.
Your're correct, the tail is a bit high...it doesn't fit as well lower but I am trying ot lower it anyway...we'll see what happens.

Lovely work! The tail looks so convincing... I remember hearing a story of a child who was born with a twelve inch tail... he ended up being worshipped in his country as a god ^^
*grumbles* Wish I had a tail...
Lovely model as well... couldn't have picked a better one myself

Isn't the tail supposed to start growing out of the small-of-the-back? Otherwise, I don't know how her pelvis is attached.

I suppose it could stand to be lower...I actually did try to place it lower but it didn't really fit so I kept it where it is.

Yeah. On me (human), my Coyxx-thing (however that derned thing's spelt) is within the, uh, "Grand Canyon" if you will. The bones themselves would have to bend outwards to even be visible. The rarity that is Human Tails, occurs when a portion of the gene that says to lose the tail after X Months was either nulled or missing. So, the human is born with a small, useless tail usually around 3 to four inches. The parents often go for the removal surgery. I think that in third world countries and highly religous ones, like India, see Tails as miracles and a chance to be in the Weekly World News
I did a partial anatomy drawing of my Furry self to help with drawing and just plain designing. I need to do the head yet and probably won't. [link]
Sorry 'bout getting so personal there...
