Celestia and Luna may be viewed as gods, even by themselves, however they are simply immortal. The real godess of Equestria, the galaxy, and even the universe, is Spacetime. And as for Celestia, ya dun fek'd up. Luna may be younger, but she was originally meant to be the supreme ruler of Equestria; known as Dream Star in full form. Unfortunately, since Celestia took the credit for... "best princess", Luna instinctively released her powers, but with the wrong motives, and became Nightmare Moon. About a decade before Nightmare Moon's prophesied return, Spacetime searched Equestria for the perfect heirs for the Elements of Harmony, since it had become clear Celestia could not use them properly without Luna's aid. Spacetime found six perfect little fillies for it, but needed one to spread the elements' power. She needed a filly who already was having dopamines triggered in the brain, or else there would be suspicion that something was off. Rainbow Dash was the only filly out of the six having a fun time at the moment, and so the elements' power was transferred to her. This jolt of energy caused Rainbow to break the sound barrier, but combined with the power of the elements, it created a magical sound rather than a boom and rainbows were spread out all over Equestria so as to bring the elements' power to the selected fillies. This also caused the ponies to earn their cutie marks.. Harmoniously. The souls of the spirits of the Elements of Harmony are kept safe in the eyes of Spacetime.
