Description
Solitaire wandered around the forest, listening to the birds chirping and singing about. He smiled as he listened, but his smile quickly turned to confusion as he heard a voice.
"Is anyone there?" It called out. The voice was feminine. Solitaire's ears perked, and he pushed his way through the woods until he came across a kuku hanging from a vine, struggling to unravel herself.
"Darn vines," the dove hissed to herself. "Why of all days did I have to get stuck in-"
"Hello?" Solitaire called. The crimson kuku turned her head, her ears falling and her expression going from self-rage to annoyed.
"Well… This is embarrassing," she said, looking the rook in the eyes.
"Miss, uh… What happened?" Solitaire asked, lowering his head so he's at her level.
"Tried harvesting some patapas. Fell from the branch and got tangled up in these vines," the dove replied.
"Would you like help, miss?" Solitaire asked.
"Please," the crimson kuku responded dryly. "Also, call me Shawty."
"I'm Solitaire," the rook greeted. He looked up into the branches, trying to figure out how to release the vines. "Hold on tight, I'll get you out of this."
"My hero," Shawty murmured. "Though it'd be great if you could hurry- I can feel my blood reaching my head."
Solitaire nodded and clambered up the tree trunk, crawling onto the lowest branch and grabbing the vine, chewing on it until it snapped. Shawty hit the ground with a hard THUD, followed by an, "OOF!"
"Oops, sorry," Solitaire apologized, scrambling back onto the ground. "I didn't mean for you to fall like that. Are you okay?"
Shawty rolled over, worming her way free from the tangled mess while Solitaire gathered up the vines and tossed them aside in a tidy pile.
"Thanks," Shawty said, standing up and shaking any stray leaves from her pelt. "Well, lesson learned, don't climb a vine-covered patapa plant."
"I'll keep that in mind myself," Solitaire joked.
"Well, I best be on my way," Shawty said. "I apologize for being cranky and blunt. But I still have to collect some patapas and other plants, and, frankly, I'm working on an empty stomach."
"Oh! Well, if you're hungry, why not join me for food?" Solitaire offered. "I mean, not like that! I'm not asking you on a date! There's just a place I know of not far from here. Very kuku-friendly- I was heading there myself. Only if you want, though, I'm not going to force you!"
Shawty gave him a slightly amused expression. "Well, gee, if you wanted to ask me on a date then just say so," she said in a tone that sounded teasing."
"I- You'd go? I mean- Would you?"
"Eh, why not?" Shawty murmured with a shrug. "Show me the way, Solitaire."
The rook smiled and started on his way with Shawty walking in pace with him.
"By the way," Shawty added, "Kinda odd that you're named after a card game."
"It sounded cool," Solitaire said.
"Hey, I'm not judging. I'm named after song lyrics," Shawty put in.
"Oh! That's actually cool!" Solitaire replied.
"Thanks!"
Shawty and Solitaire chattered along as they walked along a road, leaving the woods and heading towards a small building on the outskirts. For a non-date, the two were bonding rather well… Perhaps too well…
