Description
Shaina wasn't prepared for what she was greeted with before her friend's match. She was hoping that when Knight and Charpie came back in time for her match, plus one Dragonite and ready to kick ass. Instead, Shaina was welcomed by Knight helping Charpie walk back towards the booth, with the later wearing a swollen face and cradling her left arm, wrapped in Knight's jacket. While she was thoroughly shocked and surprised, she willed herself not to panic. Shaina was a rational thinker and a business woman. She had dealt with plenty of setbacks and surprises before. This was no different than a simple transaction that didn't go her way.
Except that this was her best friend. Shaina quickly dropped what she was doing and ran towards her.
To her credit, Shaina at least waited til the medic arrived to drill Charpie.
"Just what the hell happened?" she asked, nearly hissing, as the medic looked at
Charpie's arm, which wasn't looking so good in Shaina's opinion.
Charpie sharply sucked in some air as he gently took hold of it. It was pretty obvious that she was in pain. Somehow she managed to tell Shaina what happened. "It was Temeraire. I wanted to use a hyper potion on him but he disagreed. When I got too close to him, he lashed out and got me with his tail."
Shaina gasped. "He hit you?!"
"He was pretty agitated since Knight's last pokemon was dominating him in the battle. I should have known better, but by the time I thought about it, I was down on the ground."
Shaina ran a hand through her hair, stopping in the middle to tug at it. "But you didn't loose consciousness, right?" Charpie shook her head.
"No, I didn't."
The medic finished his examination and addressed the two before him. "I'm pretty confident it's broken, but we'll need a doctor to look at it in the hospital."
Shaina rubbed her fourehead. That wasn't what she wanted to hear. "Dammit, Char."
"I heard that one of the contestants was hurt?" Shaina looked up to see one of the judges arrive, the guy dressed in the Eelektross suit. His name was Rob, if Shaina remembered correctly.
He winced when he saw Charpie's arm but kept a serious face. "What happened?"
"I got hurt while training my pokemon before my match," Charpie quickly said. "I was trying to heal my pokemon and I got hit by his tail. It was an accident." She added that last line with emphases, making Shaina frown.
Judge Rob nodded. "I see." He looked at the medic. He took a few minutes to think. "Is it broken?"
The medic nodded. "Most likely, but she'll have to go to the hospital to get it properly examined and taken care of."
"Of course she'll need to get to the hospital," Judge Rob said. His attention turned back towards Charpie. "Ms. Charpie, I know it wasn't your intention to get hurt but since it was through your own doing and not at the fault of the tournament itself, if you're not here for your match, it'll be considered a forfeit on your half," he explained apologetically.
"What! But her match is next!" Shaina defended.
"I'm sorry, but those are the official rules of the tournament."
Shaina sighed as she rested her hand on Charpie's shoulder, clearly disappointed. They were so close to moving forward. If only they could get a little time but clearly Charpie's health came first.
"I can wait to go the hospital. If we can just splint it up, I can go ahead and battle!"
Or not.
Shaina's foot immediately came down on the idea. "Don't be an idiot! You're going to risk injuring it more for a silly match!"
Charpie turned on her. "One that you're responsible for signing me up for! " Shaina recoiled at the retort. Her friend was absolutely right of course, if there was anyone responsible for getting Charpie into this situation. It would have been Shaina. Not that she wanted to feel guilty about it. Shaina could feel the tension as her expression grew more troubled. All she could do was take a deep breath and sigh.
Charpie did the same, calming down a little. "I didn't go through all this just to throw it away now. I can last through this round. A broken arm isn't life threatening. I can do it, Shaina."
Shaina heard the pleading tone in Charpie's voice and was torn. Her friend desperately wanted Shaina to believe in her, but Shaina knew that Charpie could get really careless when she wanted to do something so badly. She was worried about her friend's safety and her health. Shaina stared at the trainer and was met with a pleading look that only took seconds to break her.
She rubbed her forehead in a fashion similar to Charpie and growled. "Of all the pigheaded things you could do...at least get it properly wrapped first."
Charpie nodded. "Thanks. Do I have enough time?"
Judge Rob looked over towards the lake. He bit his lip. "You're cutting it close."
"Could we switch matches?" Everyone turned around to face Knight, who Shaina had honestly forgotten was there. As soon as the medic came, he stood in the background watching. "If my partner and me agreed to it, could we switch the order of our matches with Charpie and her opponent?"
Judge Rob blinked, most likely not sure where Knight had popped up from, Shaina thought. The judge crossed his arms and thought for a moment, then nodded. "Since it's an emergency situation, I can allow it but only if your opponent and Ms. Charpie's agree to it."
Charpie interjected. "Knight, no! You really don't need to do this, you've already done more than enough! You need to worry about your match now!"
Knight turned his attention to Charpie. "No, I don't. Personally I think it was dumb of you to go near a pokemon that's willing to hurt you. That was a pathetic price you paid to get what you wanted." The other trainer shifted in her seat, obviously affected by what he said. Knight explained. "Look, I don't want all of your hard work and sacrifices to pay off. Mostly, I just want to see you win this round. So get that arm properly wrapped up before you go and win."
Though she wasn't overly appreciative of his tone or his choice of words, Shaina couldn't agree more with Knight. While she was grateful of his actions thus far, she wasn't quite sure of her opinion of the dark trainer. What she was sure of was that he liked Charpie. If the man was willing to stick his neck out this much for her that much had to be true. By the look of her friend, who was blushing madly, she would have to say that Charpie most likely liked Knight as well.
"Let me get a hold of both opponents and see if they agree to the change," Judge Rob said with a light smile, pulling out a walkie talkie that he had somewhere in his suit and walking off. Knight following after him.
Shaina set a hand on Charpie's shoulder.
"You sure know how to pick 'em."
oOoOoOoOoOo
Charpie tested her weight on the raft. Despite being fairly worn down from the past battles, it was only slightly wobbly. This was good for her arm, which was securely wrapped in a splint and resting in a sling that was also securely attached to her body, to prevent minimal movement. She was in pain, but it wasn't unbearable. It was similar to the time she broke her foot when she was younger.
"Are you good, Miss?" The boat attendant asked her.
"Yeah, I'm good," Charpie assured. Her opponent, Dominic, keeping his hands in his pocket, leapt from the boat and onto the raft. He landed pretty roughly, making the raft sway back and forth. He twirled the blade of grass in his mouth, looking bored with his surroundings. His Ratatta looked equally bored.
Although rough looking, Charpie thought her opponent was for the most part an okay person. She was grateful for his cooperation with the switching of the matches. Dominic had no issues switching their match order, and when he saw Charpie all bandaged up, he looked her up and down and said, "Sucks about your arm."
"Oi, Dom, we can do better than this," his pokemon piped up.
Charpie nearly did a double take. Did his pokemon really just speak?
Dominic nodded. "Definitely not the coolest raft ever and I'm going to need room. Let's switch things up a bit." He looked around and focused in on the structure in the middle of the lake, which his raft was fairly close to. He grinned. "Let's do this from up there."
Moving back a little, he took a running jump, landing on the structure and scrambling all the way up there, so that he was standing above Charpie. He looked around him and grinned. "Now this is a lot better."
Charpie gawked. "This guy is freaking monkey," she mumbled to herself.
"Would contestants please decide on the nature of their battle," Mike asked, hovering above them.
Both Dominic and Charpie nodded.
"I'm good with four on four," he offered.
"Can we do doubles?"
Dominic shrugged. "It's cool with me."
"If both contestants are ready? Excellent. LET THE BATTLE BEGIN!" Mike projected.
Charpie reached for her pokeballs.
The battle had begun!
