Description
Smuppet Plushie Sewing Tutorial PART 1I made this pattern and tutorial to help you make your own Smuppet plushies. I would consider this an Intermediate sewing project, and can be done completely by hand if you do not have a sewing machine. Please read all instructions before buying, cutting, or sewing anything.

Smuppets are from Homestuck, a web-comic written by Andrew Hussie and belong to him. This pattern was created by me and is for personal use only.

This is awesome! I'm so excited to make one.
One question: How do you do an overcast stitch like that?

AGH
Im trying to make this out of felt, and in doing so, while sewing the body halves together, it stretched the felt!
any suggestions on how i can fix this?

lishlitz In reply to Kiratroll [2012-04-11 21:51:40 +0000 UTC]
i'm sorry, i really wish i could give you a suggestion. i don't work much with felt because it doesn't have a whole lot of give. fleece has more stretch and softness to it and is much easier to work with. it really would give you better results. good luck

I can't believe there's actually a tutorial and everything for this! I just got into Homestuck a few months ago, and I was joking with my friends that I was going to make one of them a smuppet for their birthday, and then I came across this ^_^ It's really well written and you sew very well
I have a few questions, though -- how advanced would you consider "intermediate" to be? I've done a little sewing, about half of it by hand, and I can do most of the basic stitches along with a few others, and I've made some plushies before too, so maybe I could figure it out...? Also, what do you use for stuffing and where would you buy it at? I've been using cottonballs, but they're really frustrating to work with and they make everything look lumpy ._.

if you've made plushies before and know basic hand stitches you should be good to go! just take it step by step. i make my tutorials for people new to sewing. i always suggest reading through the whole tutorial first to be sure you understand it and will be able to do the project. i've had tonz of feed back from beginners that find them helpful and easy to follow and were pleased with their creations i use polyester fiberfill stuffing that i purchase at my local fabric store. they sell different size bags for different sized projects. i buy big bags cuz i make tonz of plushies, but a small bag should be enough for one plushie. good luck!<3

Oh, okay. That's really good to hear! And I'll have to be sure to pick some fiberfill up soon Thanks again for the help! Now just to convince my mom to let me make a smuppet... perhaps I'll just make off with her sewing kit >

I'd love to make one! They're so adorable/annoying/creepy! I took a look at the fabrics I already had, and I found a fleece(-ish?) fabric that is slightly stretchy. Would it work if I made a Smuppet out of that or should I use a non-stretchy fabric? :3

lishlitz In reply to Dafoxi-Tohvel [2012-03-07 19:44:58 +0000 UTC]
slightly stretchy should work great! i don't care for non-stretchy stuff, like felt, as much. have fun and let me know how it turns out

Thank you, I sure will! Yeah, only if it doesn't turn out to be too difficult for me. Oh, and I suppose it's okay to make the eyes out of felt or something similar?

lishlitz In reply to Dafoxi-Tohvel [2012-03-07 21:02:03 +0000 UTC]
sure, get creative! the lemonsnout i made has felt eyes painted to look like buttons cuz i was too lazy to go buy buttons that day! hahaha!

sorry i donΒ΄t understand in the leg.
"trim the half-circle" it means cut it?
π: 0 β©: 1
lishlitz In reply to BLooDy-TeaRs-PanThEr [2012-03-01 05:17:39 +0000 UTC]
yep, then you sew the trimmed side to the body. this makes the leg lay flatter to the body instead of sticking strait out like the arms good luck!

When you say that you 'trimmed the half circle' did you cut it off? I'm a little confused :C
π: 0 β©: 1
lishlitz In reply to MindOfADrawer [2012-01-31 23:35:47 +0000 UTC]
yep, lay the legs down in front of you, opposite eachother like in the picture, then trim off the little half circle from only the front half, as shown in the pic. this is simply to help the leg lay flatter against the body instead of sticking strait out hope that helped! good luck!!

I have absolutely no experience with plushes, but I'm really happy someone finally made a (really good I might add!) Smuppet tutorial... my friend and I are stoked. A craft day is planned.
Any pointers for someone who has no clue what the hell they're doing?? XD
π: 0 β©: 1
lishlitz In reply to stardroidjean [2012-01-31 06:49:27 +0000 UTC]
yea! glad you like! and craft day sounds fun you guys will do fine. just read through the entire directions first so you know your game plan, then just take it step by step. keep your stitches close together and pull them tight so the seams don't burst when you stuff that rump! stuffing is super important.. don't just stuff, take your time and sculpt with the stuffing. good luck and let me know how they turn out!

I've had a couple of craft days with her already, but she was working on non-Homestuck things and I was sculpting ([link] and [link] :3)
Thanks a lot If I find success I am really tempted to use something like minky to make an even softer one. Not sure when this is going down but I'll be sure to show you anything I make with your patterns!

Awww, thank you! Craft obsessions are good, though. I wish I was so into art as I was before, I really need to get that mood back.

my moods come and go too, i think that's normal. when i need inspiration or a change of pace i go wander around the craft store. something new always catches my eye and gets me motivated
