Description
Ok this is my version of one of my favorite antagonist in literature: The Unnamed, from the classic Italian novel “ I Promessi Sposi” by Alessandro Manzoni. The Unnamed isn’t the main villain of the story, but he’s a much more consistent threat than him. He’s the most influential noble of Lombardy, a cruel man who commands an army ruthless mercenary, striking fear even in the hearth of nobles, men and women of church and civilians alike. People became so scared of him that they not even pronounce his name anymore, thus referring to him as: The Unnamed. When the main antagonist Don Rodrigo, arrives at the Unnamed’s castle he realizes that his noble status does not matter there, he’s just another pawn to move in the many political games that happened in Italy during the XV century. In his very first appearance this character is presented to us as an extremely imposing figure, despite acting with extreme calm and never raising his voice. But after all this build up to how despicable this man is, to the point where he seems like a living legend, when he captures Lucia, something that Don Rodrigo’s men attempted with very little success, in less than a day, after all this time he feels different. He disposed of many like they were objects for years, but after a terrible nightmare he realizes what awaits him on this path of horrible deeds: to be erase from existence after dying alone. But still despite all of this, the Unnamed still maintain his menacing presence despite acting less despicably towards Lucia while she’s in prison. In the end his final act of redemption happens when he meet the cardinal Federico Borromeo, who was traveling around Italy to confess whoever wanted to. In front of this kind man the Unnamed rigid appearance finally brake and he falls to his knees in tears overwhelmed by his guilt. The Unnamed is usually represented as a severe noble man in his late 60, but I believe that this image of him doesn’t fully express what the character represents so, since his the leader of a small army, I decided to make him a knight, covering his face also help represent the fact that people see him as some sort of Boogeyman, in the left hand he has a necklace with the tau symbol which represent redemption.
