Description
I think everyone knows who Shocker is: the second supervillain that Spider-Man had to face, the first criminal to ever force him to retreat, and the most notorious punching bag of New York, who somehow survived some of the most terrifying catastrophes to ever hit the Marvel Universe. In short, Shocker had the potential to be one of Spider-Man greatest foes, but ended up screwing things up more than once due to his stupidity, despite being probably one of the most brilliant engineers in New York without even a proper education. That’s probably what I like the most about this character, apart from the kickass outfits,: in a way he’s Peter’s perfect opposite: much like our hero he obtained powers ( by creating his gauntlets), made a bad choice just like Peter did with letting the thug whom would have later killed his uncle( in Shocker’s case he participated in various robberies), but unlike Peter he refused the responsibility and the possibility to do some good that came with those powers and instead got stuck in an endless cycle, their costumes are also quite similar if you look closely. So since the Spider-Man’s legacy has been now passed down to many, much as others of his rouges, I thought it was time for Shocker to get a new face as well.Back Story
After many years of being the Shocker, during a robbery Herman Schultz got arrested once again after being defeated by the Spider-Man, a title now hold by Miles Morales as Peter retired, but this arrest brought him close to a therapist at Rykers, that volunteered for the new reformation program organized by the mayor: Betsy Holler. After a few interviews the two starting feeling a bond between each other, and this made Herman understand that perhaps it was now time to say goodbye to the Shocker and start anew. After 4 years, Herman finally got to stay with Betsy, in a place that wasn’t an interrogation room, the two lived together for a quite a few years, they even got married in the meantime. But one day Betsy got pregnant and Herman’s past came knocking at the door, when an old pal of his who he thought was dead showed up: Jeff Hagees aka 8-ball. Hagees was severely wounded and in a hurry he explained that he had to be taken to an underground hospital as fast as possible. Herman owed a lot to Jeff and so despite Betsy warnings he once again suited up as Shocker and started carrying his friend to his desired location as soon as possible. Unfortunately despite the effort he didn’t go unnoticed and Spider-Man promptly intervened, but during the confrontation where Shocker didn’t even tried to attack the hero, as he wasn’t no longer used to use his gauntlets ended up causing grave damages to a building. In a desperate attempt Herman helped Miles evacuate the civilians, after putting down 8-ball in a safe spot, using his gauntlets to make a path through the collapsing building, nobody died, but Herman rib cage was crushed after pushing his old Nemesis aside from a collapsing wall, since the Spider senses were weakened by the shockwaves. The Shocker later died in the ambulance before it reached the hospital, but in his last moments of life he was at least able to say goodbye to his wife and his three year old son: Marcus.
8-Ball didn’t make it to the hospital either, as the vehicle was ambushed by mysterious hitmen that killed everyone on board. 9 years later Betsy married again this time with a cop, he was a severe and strict person, but with a kind heart inside. When looking at him Betsy saw Herman in a way, but Marcus just saw a replacement. After seeing his father’s death the kid grew more and more distant to the people around them, especially his stepfather who hoped that Marcus would follow his steps, but his loneliness was something more than the repercussions of a childhood trauma. Marcus in fact is extremely intelligent and has particular interests that he developed while watching his father at work in his garage, as during his time as a civilian Herman became a mechanic. Of course he had also other common interests like videogames, but he never liked the ones that most of his peers played. He was naturally picked up upon due to his behavior and due to his father identity as the Shocker, but he always responded with such irony and malice that soon enough the bullies decided to pick on someone more vulnerable and satisfying to torment. In time Marcus started adopting his mother’s last name Holler. During all this years his stepfather desperately tried to influence him into becoming a cop, ruining their relationship even more. Until one day Marcus decided to look through 8-ball death, discovering that the story was so deep and complex that he should have needed an intense investigation to reach the truth, meanwhile Marcus’ stepfather was promoted as commissioner, an event which convinced the teenager that he knew at least a small part about the story. So Marcus decided to dug deeper, but to do that he needed his father’s equipment, if the police was too corrupted to handle this and Spider-Man man was too busy showing off beating up random thugs, it would have been easier if he took care of this himself. But during the repairs of the Shocker’s suit he accidentally blasted himself with a powerful shockwaves. The effect were quite unexpected as Marcus inherited the powers of the gauntlets, being capable of emitting shockwaves from its all body at various intensities, although he still need the protection that his father used to prevent his brain to turn into mush. With this new powers he decided to take a responsibility: take out the crooked system that polluted New York, and put an end to Spider-Man once and for all, as he believes that the Web Slinger is also involved in this mess. In the meantime however Miles has now passed the mantle of Spider-Man to none other than Peter’s daughter: Mayday who is casually also in class with Marcus.
Unlike his father Marcus is a much more consistent threat, since he prefers to plan his heists rather than entering from the front door like his predecessor, and most importantly he can emit Shocker’s signature shockwaves from his hole body, meaning he’s considerably more dangerous. But after every hit he generally give most of the money away to various charities, and occasionally keeping some to buy videogames or electronic parts, using a voluntary job at Parker labs as an excuse when asked where he get the money. Marcus has contrasting feelings towards Peter, he recognizes the good he’s done with his inventions, but he suspects him to be involved with Spider-Man, or more precisely Spider-Girl. As the Shocker Marcus also uses shock grenades, trip mines and other non-lethal gadgets. He uses his Father’s original mask as a reminder of his responsibility.
