Description
I use a slightly different technique nowadays - I made that in to a tutorial too, right here : fav.me/ddfyvmv
--------------------------------
thing I've been doing a lot lately with my art, its very simple but in my opinion very effective
Thought I would share it !
I used SAI2 for this, but I think it's also possible for other art programs, as long as overlay is a layer mode
Β
note works better with thinner line art - if you have any tranparent spots after this , create a layer underneath everything and colour it in ~

Oh!! Checking again I realize I'd entirely looked over part of step 4, where the new colored layer is set to overlay and the black layer remains... silly me, you're absolutely right! Haha oops

Lock the layer (preserve opacity) and use a large pen to colour it in

Oh this is brilliant! I've always wondered how to do this, I've been selecting the opaque on my line layer to individually colour the lines. This is much better.

This is such a good trick! Whenever I colored the lineart in my work, I used to switch in between colors to make it match the base colors underneath. I believe this trick will make the process much less time-consuming. Thank you for sharing!!

How do you make the color even with the lineart? when I do it the lines look lumpy and uneven.

I don't know how to explain this, but how to color areas under the lines? I use bucket in my arts, so i have a a lot of problem with it. Who knows?
π: 0 β©: 1
looji In reply to big-orcat [2018-08-29 12:09:46 +0000 UTC]
I use bucket too, but what I also do is whenever I make a new layer for a colour I do that underneath the previous coloured layer
there I also use the bucket tool to colour in certain areas, but I will also use my colour pen to also colour underneath the first layer
im not english and awfull at explaining so I made the quickest drawing ever to explain it, sorry it looks so shitty haha
sorry if its still unclear haha

Line art is the outlines of your drawing..

very cool trick, works if you adapt the purple to other colours depending on the overall strongest colour of your art. But yeah, love that trick as I always struggle to strike a balance between having the strong lineart show through or subtly blending with the shaded flats.Β
Awesome work, love your tutes!

hm when i try it looks very unclean and dirty, does it just work when you manually draw the flats? ( I use bucket tool that-when I do a clipping layer of the black lines and color them manually so one layer is still at 100 percent opacity is clean) but now the borders are visible through the lines @@

looji In reply to JackyBunnyBun [2018-08-29 11:48:45 +0000 UTC]
I fill in everything with the bucket and colour all the spots I missed myself
the reason it only works with thin lineart is because the overlay effect on the top layer uses the colours underneath to make a new colour (to put it simply)
when something underneath it isn't coloured (for example when you didn't reach that part because the lineart was above it) it uses the colour of the background and leaves lighter spots
you can always try to put your whole image in a map, flat the image and copy the flat image you created. Then you undo the flattening so you have all your layers back
and underneath the whole image paste the flatten image you just created, and make it one colour (probably something dark) It still can look messy but then you can always go to the coloured layers and colour it in a little neater. But that can maybe be a lot of work hehe - you can always do it by hand by using a clipping mask above the lineart layer and give parts of the lineart different colours. Sorry if this wasn't helpfull at all haha

what does map and flatten mean? I use paint tool SAI so i have zero clue what this means xD
>ou can always do it by hand by using a clipping mask above the lineart layer and give parts of the lineart different colours
yea this is what i meant that i do but i thought your way maybe saves a lot of work.Β
hm
or I use your method and just do another layer at topΒ , fixing tiny messed up areas. at least your way is much faster xD

looji In reply to JackyBunnyBun [2018-08-29 15:27:24 +0000 UTC]
In SAI you can make maps / folders (I don't know what it's called right now sorry) it's next to the "add layer" button. When you select the map and push the button with a plus (second row, second button) and the whole map will become one layer
