Description
I've felt like this a bit lately….Based on a magazine illustration I did recently… changed it a bit and then painted in a bunch of stuff from my desk. Ignore the wildy inaccurate perspective work… it looked quirky and charming in my original sketch but now its starting to bother me...
Things to know.
• this is about the 7th or 8th time I've painted the plastic skull on my desk… and yes, I have a plastic skull on my desk.
• no, that isn't really me…. I have a goatee and don't dribble as much when I drink.
• painting multiple drinking cans is less fun than you might think.
• dinosaurs on the other hand are awesome!
Pencil sketch, painted in photoshop.

Looks like a colorized Zbrush sketch...not your best work...they can't all be home runs.

Its all a pencil sketch and then painted in photoshop. I did have concerns that it wasn't as fluid as I would have liked ... all those clean geometrical shapes don't help it...but I was quite pleased with how I painted the skull and dinosaur!

Ok well the Dino is pretty good, but then it's in the back, in shadow and small....everything looks better when its small.
Maybe if it had been a self portrait, it might have been more plausible. The sheen on the shirt is screaming "I love Rayon!"...I hate Rayon.
...but all this is moot, its your piece and i really don't wish to critique an artist that is so successful every other time.

Shiny stuff embedded in fabric, left over after the last alien invasion of Earth...which as you already know...was a long time ago...

Awesome Dave! Kinda looks like me, actually. I share the attitude at least. How do you have time to complain about work and do THIS?

Loopydave In reply to tombancroft [2013-05-21 14:56:44 +0000 UTC]
Thanks Tom! It's a reworking of a commercial illustration I did for a magazine where I had already painted the figure, desk and monitor... so really all I had to do was take out the unrelated stuff and paint in the skull, dino, drink cans, laptop etc. Ended up being quite cathartic in the end

actually the skewed perspective makes it work
after all, it's a one-eyed-focus kinda scene anyway
i's backs after much absence, and the first thing I
had to do was see what adventures I missed from
your wacky world
awesome as always, friend!

lol I love this piece this is how I am feel lately as well
I love how you captured the emotion and how much detail you added, very naturalistic and the mood is brought out so well by the dim lighting and your color scheme. Very well done and very beautiful, I love art that is also entertaining

Not sure why, but it made me think of a short conversation from the movie, "Pitch Black"
"..I thought you said it was clear."
"I said, 'it Looked clear.'"
"Oh.. well, how's it look now?"
"Looks clear."
Nice piece.

Now, I just need to find a psychiatrist who can tell me how I made the segue from your artwork to the movie.

Bob, the skull? My first thought was "juggling dripping wet kittens"; which really is a lot like juggling deadlines with human toddlers underfoot, and into everything.

No matter how fast computers get, they are never fast enough, i can remember when a simpe word document would take 10 minutes to refresh when scrolling down a screen.. then the Pc would crash half the time
Dinosaurs and skulls!

And yes, dinosaurs and skulls.... awesome combo!
Cheers!
