Description While visiting a temple in Vietnam, I caught a glance of this man, teaching, praying and smiling all the while, despite goofy tourists everywhere. The power of a smile is almost unparalled.

I know that most people do not really appreciate this type work on DA (i hope more people subit photojournalism), but i would like people to get a chance to see some of my street portraiture...i think it is the most profound type of photography...it opens the mind to the similarities in people.

Thank you.

A candid shot can speak volumes more than most canned posed photos. I really find this one appealing to look at because of the relaxed pose of the man. He sits serene with legs crossed and a geniune smile. It is the relaxed stance and the warm smile that invites the viewer to sit down beside him and hear of the tales/teachings he will tell.

"photojournalism" pictures are one of my favourites, i really like this, the expression in the face of the man an, as you explained, not aware of the people around, it's a great picture!

Happy are those who are in such direct communion with God. Eastern spiritual masters are so much more simple, sincere, and unpretentious than the Western, Christian, self-proclaimed authorities. Definetely a :+fave:

holy shite, are you kidding?!? i would absolutely LOVE to see more street shots like this on DA...

i can't express how much i love these types of shots, especially of older people and their 'odd' little things they do. when i was younger (about 7 or , we were walking around Atlanta and i saw this old man sitting in a park, tossing peanuts to a dozen or so squirrels. they were practically hording around him. anyways, this type of photo always reminds me of that moment, and it always brings a smile to my face...thank you...

instant *fave...

That smile makes me think that this guy knows something secrete about the world. Like no matter what happens in the world, it will all in good. Like you could never convents this old man that the world is a bad place. You can see all this in his smile.

I love this

true, photojournalism is not looked upon with as much appreciation as expressive photography etc... I think most people would say that your expressive photos, your self-portraits and your architectural photos are much better than this one.

But I know photojournalism is what you realy enjoy... so go ahead, have a blast!

"Cloud of Unknowing" will always be my fave from you.

Oh, and about this photo... great capture, made me smile as well.

See, good photography is appreciated no matter how.

First of all, I am amazed by the image itself, it looks really good to be done without any preparation, and being a street photo with a compact digital (even if it's a Canon )...

Second, the pose is just perfect, and the composition you've chosen to make is great - I especially like the way you cropped one of the feet, but it doesn't seems 'amputated' but, on the contrary, it brings solidity to the image.

then, the smile... it makes wonders, indeed!

So, no wonder that this has received the feedback that it has...

I get what you were doing here, but you just didn't get lucky, I think. Photographs aren't just waiting to be taken. You have to look for it and find it at the right time. I'm talking about his (ahem) apparel. ... .but you knew that.

and you don't generally think of happy wise men with sun glasses and farmer boots.

i don't like the color. B&W seems too lame. but i can't think of anything unlamer.

now on the subject of visual world socio-journalism... right on. When I was in lithuania I used to walk around the city watching people get used up. I could see charlatans peeling layers off the defense mechanism people should be aware of. I wish I had a camera...

I wonder if you speak vietnamese. i wanna travelle.

good day.

Lovely photographic capture. His pose and facial expression is excellent.
