Description It was roughly 4:00 pm when Conner walked into the 7-11.  He paused a moment to wipe the sweat from his brow.  Outside, it was a blistering 102 degrees, but in here, it was a refreshing 75.  By the time he opened his eyes to adjust from the light, he was already that much closer to the slurpee machine, the low hum drawing him in.  He grabs the biggest size, and fills it up with the orange Fanta flavor.  He walks around, trying to decide what else to get.  Walks down the chip isle, the candy isle, and lastly, looks at the donuts and hot dogs.  Nothing really appealed to him today.

There was no line, as he was the only person there at the time, so he didn’t have to wait long, the incense the man was burning was starting to get to him.  “Anything else?”  The cashier asks.  “No, that’ll be all for today.” Conner responds politely.  As he leaves the counter, he heard the man turn on his small TV and started watching some foreign movie.  Just as he turns around, the doors slide open with a ding, and in walks a small, 5’7” brunette woman.

“Conner? Oh my God, hi!”  The woman runs up and hugs him, her face buried in his chest.  Conner hugs her back with his free arm.  “Hi Julie, nice to see you” he says as he lets go, forcing a kind smile on his face.  “So what are you up to?  How’s your dog Flint?”  She asks as she starts walking inside, looking at the snacks.  “Oh, not much I guess.  Just got outta class.  Flint’s doing fine.”  Connor replies back, nervously sipping his slurpee.  Conner noticed that the man’s TV has been turned down, trying not to look like he’s eaves dropping.  “Oh, so you’re going to school now?  Are you still working at that bar?”  Julie responds while staring inquisitively into fridge, deciding what drink to buy.  “Yeah, I have a lot of free time now so I’m taking classes to get my GED.  I’m also heading to work in a couple hours, my shift starts at nine.”  “That’s great to hear,” Julie responds as she bounces up with her vitamin water, heading towards the cashier, “I guess I’ll see you tonight then, I’ll bring Trevor.”

Conner’s muscles tense up.  He takes a deep breath and takes a sip of his slurpee, finding it already empty.  “Yeah, that’ll be… That’ll be just great.” Conner responds with a forced smile.  “Cool, you two haven’t talked in like, 2 years.  You guys should totally catch up.”  With that, she grabs her water, and leaves the store.  He pauses a moment, breathing deeply trying to calm himself down, the cashier’s eyes were fixed on him, though his face was still on the small TV.

He steps outside, and slams the empty slurpee cup in the trash bin beside the door.  His hand is shaking.  He finds himself reaching for something in his back pocket and stops himself.  “Calm down.” He tells himself.  “Calm down.”  He repeats the mantra until his grip loosens and pulls his hand away.  Conner walks over to his ’67 Mustang, the roaring engine brings himself back to his senses.  He pulls out of the parking lot, and heads home.
