The commander raises an eyebrow.
"Only 9S units are modeled after males. If that is what you meant. At any rate, may I have some basic information about you?"

"I don't know? Last thing before waking up today I just went to bed, back when there were no machines attacking Earth. And, uh, I was talking with you friend about this... Do you have any food?"

"There is a warehouse full of things from the old world. I will send a 9S unit in with something edible. I suppose it does not matter how you are alive, it is enough that you are alive. Do you have any special skills that can help the YoRHA?"

Her lips purse, somehow she's still very attractive.

"Your food and water will be in soon. Goodbye, I will see you tomorrow to take you to the engineering wing."
She leaves, without waiting to hear if you had anything to say.

"Right. And than--aaand she's gone. Lovely." I quickly relieve myself and return for whatever food they bring.

A 9S unit enters. Bringing in what seems to be a microwavable TV dinner and a pitcher of water and a glass. He pours you a glass of water, then leaves without a word.

"I'm gonna miss peaches..." I eat the ancient frozen meal and drink, then go to bed exhausted.

The next morning, you're awoken by 2B dumping you out of bed.
"It is time to begin work."

"Ah! Jesus! The ffuu..." I rub my eyes, remembering what happened. "What... what time is it?"

"Yeah... Too early. Remember when I said about a third of the time?" I groan, shaking my head.

"I did mention that insufficient sleep impedes human cognition, right?" I stagger to my feet. "I don't suppose you have coffee around here?"

"I refuse to believe that was eight hours." I grumble. "Fine, fine, where are we going?"

She turns and begins to walk.

βRight. Yeah. Been doing a lot of that lately.β I trail behind her reluctantly.

She ushers you into a cubicle and plops a manual in front of you.
"This should teach you everything you need to know."

Even in the apocalypse I haven't escaped office work. I'm honestly a little disappointed.

I sigh. "Right. Well, fuck." Without much other option, I open up the book and start reading.

The code is unlike anything you've ever seen, seeming to use a completely different basic functioning platform then the languages you're used to.

"Yeah... All in a week. With one book. To learn what took me two years of tech college to figure out last time. I am so, so fucked." I grumble, still trying despite the obvious impossibility. "Maybe if I tank the commander I can drop the whole network of these things? Give me some time to actually figure things out?"

A 9S unit with a tray enters, seeing the concern on your face.

"Gah!" I jump. "Uh... yeah! Yeah, yeah, totally, I..." I say, shifty-eyed.

He looks at you with mild concern

"Right! Yeah, uh... everything? This system doesn't look like it has... anything in common with the languages I'm familiar with."

"You're referring to human code like C+ and C-Sharp? Correct? Well, interestingly enough we do have a converter. So, if you want to program in C+, then you can go ahead and convert our code into C+."
He taps on your computer, and the language on the screen becomes much more recognizableΒ

Once again, I'm struck speechless by this revelation. I open and close my mouth several times, processing this. Once I finally do...
"Why the FUCK would they not tell me about this?" I scream.

This causes the 9S to recoil, you can hear the sounds of typing stop.
"B-because they don't know how the tech works, they just know about the programming they're running! I'm sorry! We can change it Β back if you want!"
He looks at you, afraid and shocked

I take a few deep, calming breaths. "No. No, it's fine. Thank you." I say through gritted teeth.
