This base and its two sister bases, Fort Casey and Fort Warden was created to guard the Puget Sound from invasion by enemy ships. It was established around the turn of the 20th century. With the advent of missiles and airplanes around World War 2 and beyond. The base become outmoded. Now its a popular state park, both for campers and day trippers.
