Well I dug down to the right height and then I created a massive underground network of 'tunnels' which really was just one long hallway with more straight hallways every two blocks.
I haven't played MC in forever, though so idk how large it was.

Just keep out for the level being at y=11. That's the level where a lot of diamonds are at while still being above lava.

You do have to dig fairly deep, however. All the luck in the world won't get you a diamond if you're mining too high...
