Description An assortment of creatures from my Speculative Biology project of Mars ll, made for the first eight days of #spectember2023 .
1.Testudotitan atlas: Probably by far the most prominent megaverbivore on Mars ll, These giant 8-meter-tall pseudo-turtle titans roam the oak-savannas stretching across the semiarid supercontinent of Yariloia in small herds consisting of 12-20 animals. As a keystone species in their ecosystem, they play a major role in seed-dispersal.
2. Plains Zipper-Jaw: These elephant-like and elephant-sized distant relatives of shrews live in hyena-like clans on the oak-savannas and are opportunistic, omnivorous scavengers who sometimes hunt live prey.
3. Hyena-Badger: This huge, fearless, bear-sized mustelid shares its grassland habitat with the Testudotitans and Zipper-Jaws and voraciously consumes a wide variety of prey, ranging from arthropods and mammals to the eggs or hatchlings of birds and reptiles.
4. Ibis-Headed Pseudochiropteran: With a wingspan of about 13 meters and a standing height of up to 8 meters, this is by far the largest of the Pseudochiroptera, a family of huge, strange flying perissodactyl mammals that dominate the skies of Mars ll. They use their incredibly hollow bones and powerful wing muscles to cover long distances and they use their powerful sense of smell to locate carcasses hundreds of kilometers away. Apart from scavenging, Ibis-Headed Pseudochiropterans also occasionally hunt live horse-sized prey hiding among the 2-meter-tall grasses in some areas of their wide rage.
5. Megaxiphias imperator: At length of 14-18 meters, this Imperial Great-Sword is among the largest marine vertebrate predators of Mars ll and frequents the warm, tropical waters of the seas surrounding Yariloia and the smaller, nearly-insular continent of Tataria. It preys on smaller bony fish as well as ocean-going mammals up to the size of a beluga.
6. Hammer-Headed Terror-Bird: This carnivorous, 3.5-meter-tall distant relative of the budgerigars inhabits Yariloia’s open grasslands, where is uses its powerful hind legs to outrun its swift-footed ungulate prey and deliver a fatal blow to their bones with the use of a massive, hammer-shaped head that is supported by a heavily-robust neck and enforced with thick layers of Keratin.
7. Great Konik: At about 5 meters long and 3.4 meters tall at the withers, the Great Konik is among the largest of the diverse horse species found on Mars ll and is mostly native to Yariloia. They live in harems with many mares and their foals, and are led by a single dominant stallion who fights against other stallions over territory or mating rights.
8. Stickleback Crocodie-Fish: An inhabitant of freshwater environments across certain parts of Yariloia, this 3-meter-long relative of the pike actively hunts smaller fish and occasionally crustaceans with the use of its long, gharial-like jaws, the long, narrow teeth of which are used for snapping shut any struggling prey. The males happen to be far larger than the females, which have shorted rostrums and reach up to 2.3 meters in length. Both sexes also happen to take turns building a large, tent-sized nest within which they raise their eggs and young.
