This old elf mage was well overdue a revamp! I did change a number of things about his bio too- so if you have the time please do give it a read.

-------------------------

Name: Cassidian Azul

Nickname(s): “The Blue Mage”, “Cass”, “Cassie”

Age: 46

Race/species: Half-Elf (non elven parent was human)

Gender: Male

Sexuality: Straight

Occupation: Mage, sells magical services from home.

-------------------------

Height: 5’8”

Weight: 437 Pounds

Hair Colour: Silvery Gray

Eye Colour: Purple

Blemishes/Tattoos: Thanks to an accident while learning magic at a young age, Cassidian’s skin is permanently a dull shade of blue. The effects of a magical illness have accelerated his aging, making him appear closer to 60 than his true age.

Clothing Style: Very, very formal when expecting guests. Typically wears a purple vest, blue pants, pink ribbon, and purple boots. These faded garments are his former adventuring gear (resized countless times). His casual outfits consist of loose-fitting sweaters and other warm clothes.

-------------------------

Likes:

✧ Tea: A warm cup and a plate of cookies at his coffee table while he reads a book. That much is a deeply ingrained habit. His favorite flavor is mint, and he always keeps a large number of flavors in stock for guests- sheer remaining wealth from his adventuring days is what allows him to afford this.

✧ Wide Empty Spaces: This is for two reasons. One, an empty space such as an open field means that even grave errors with magic practice do not hurt anyone. The second is that these spaces are quiet enough to promote the state of calm he needs to cast properly.

✧ Company: Well, who doesn't like company? But Cassidian downright craves having a friendly soul to chat with. He rarely has anyone to talk to, aside from customers, and merchants while getting groceries, but that is simply business. He really values the opportunity for genuine conversation.

Dislikes:

✧ His Current Lifestyle: An average day for Cassidian, as it stands now. Involves waking up, having a few big meals, doing small magical tasks for customers, and whittling the hours away by reading. A sedentary life such as this has contributed to both his excessive waistline, and his fading reputation, and so, he resents this way of life.

✧ Fire Mages: Not the school of magic itself, but the stereotypical student of it. Those hotheads wishing to wield scorching power and exert their newfound strength at every opportunity. He won’t fault someone for wanting to learn a fire spell or two, but he holds an irrational dislike for those who introduce themselves as fire mages, pyromancers, or anything of the sort. In his eyes, those people are always pyromaniacs.

✧ Staircases: He’s 437 pounds, not the strongest of all half-elves, and has the body of a 60 year old. He is not fond of stairs, especially long or narrow ones. So he does not go up or down them unless he absolutely has no choice at all. For this reason, the upper floor of his home is rather dusty.

Personality Strengths:

✧ Hard To Surprise: Cassidian was once an adventurer, it almost goes without saying that the man has seen some truly wild- and horrifying- things. Few things excite him, but more importantly, it is very, very difficult to startle or frighten him.

✧ Tolerant: He has grown past simply judging people by looks or first impressions (except fire mages). It doesn’t matter what someone is, unless they are obviously evil, this half elf will treat that person as an equal. Even necromancy, he views simply as another school of magic, in spite of its grim exterior.

✧ Calm: Most of his magic inherently depends on a peaceful state of mind, and so his mind has already been trained to easily achieve such a state unless under truly dire pressures. A side effect of this is a generally relaxed attitude, in turn.

Personality Weaknesses:

✧ VERY Stubborn: You aren’t going to change his mind, no way no sir. Cassidian is not merely stubborn. He is stubborn in a way only an older man can be stubborn. Pressing him on things he’s made his mind on are one of only a few ways to drive this mage to anger. He has a tendency to refuse help if offered assistance.

✧ Pessimistic: Not quite about life, the universe, and everything. It’s the odds of smaller-scale things that he can feel rather pessimistic about. Will he be able to walk all that way without tiring too much to make it back? Probably not, he thinks. Will that wooden bridge be able to bear his heft? He certainly doesn’t want to find out.

✧ Lazy: He loathes to admit it, but a decade of retirement has led him into exactly what would be considered a lazy person. He mostly lies around his home. He only generally does things that he has to do or really wants to do. He is, by definition, lazy.

Fears:

✧ Being Forgotten: Cassidian is no fame-seeker, but he was once a well known and respected adventurer. He notices that those who have heard of him and his past deeds are fewer in number. For that reason, he’s afraid of being forgotten entirely. Of just being ‘that old mage at the outskirts of town’ and nothing more.

✧ Aging: Due to the effects of a magical illness, Cassidian’s aging is accelerated. The rate at which this occurs is non linear. As a result, Cassidian has a deeply rooted fear. The knowledge that he does not know how long he has left. He’s poured thousands of hours into study, out of desperate hope that he might one day find a cure for this condition.

-------------------------

Fatal Flaw: Unmotivated, unless in direct relation to his firmly decided goals of finding and then teaching an apprentice, and seeking a cure for his illness. Cassidian finds it extremely difficult to get the motivation to get off his butt and do things other than his usual schedule. His increasingly large weight only further complicates this issue, and the ability to summon a plateful of cookies at will really is not helping either. In this sense, he is sorely in need of another person to give him a bit of a verbal nudge. He would be deeply grateful for that, but even then, that would be far from actually solving the issue.

Personality: A patient, calm, and welcoming old man. That is the first impression that Cassidian gives to many. These traits are true, but there is more to him than that. He speaks fancifully, and always, always sticks to the idea that hospitality is sacred. The man is old fashioned, but not ignorantly so. The Blue Mage has respect for all except evil, and fire mages. Cassidian is proud of his skill in magic, but loathsome of his current lot in life, and will gladly ramble endlessly about his past if given the opportunity to do so.
In his past as an adventurer. He used to be more cocky and reckless.

Skills/Talents:

✧ The Magical Arts: Primarily water, ice, and mist based spells, but he has also dabbled in clairvoyance. Having practiced since a young age, he is very experienced in this field. The kinds of magic that Cassidian knows are as follows. His magic is cast by hand via gestures, and requires both focus and a calm state of mind.

  • Water, Ice, and Mist manipulation (Controlling the substances, including using them as projectiles, requires substance to be nearby to be used)

  • Dowsing (Only for water)

  • Summoning or Stopping Rain (within a short radius around self)

  • Barriers (composed of ambient humidity, sturdy enough for him to stand on top of!)

  • Summoning food (He’s not proud of having mastered this spell, usually consists of tea and a plate of cookies, summoned food is heavily influenced by desires and often is not healthy)

  • Future Prediction (Primarily accomplished through Tasseography, predictions given are always vague, spell does not always succeed. Very rarely results in vivid visions)

✧ Handwriting: Cursive writing so fancy that most would probably have a very difficult time actually reading the stuff.

Misc Info:

✧ His Cane: Not a mundane nor enchanted piece of wood. Cassidian’s cane is a sentient creature known as a mimic root named “Mimi”. The creature is bound to him, and instantly is aware when he needs it with no verbal communication required. Left to its own devices, Mimi is curious and rather clumsy due to its top heavy form. In Cassidian’s long-past adventuring days, Mimi assumed the form of a staff. Because it had been a staff for half of the Blue Mage’s life, and a cane for the other. Mimi only understands how to change its form into various wooden poles. It feeds off both sunlight and small insects.

✧ Magical Illness: Caused by excessive casting of magic. Mana Dysplasia can occur when there is no more mana in the victim’s body. This results in large amounts of magical energy ‘flowing’ into it. When this happens, there is a chance that the mana ‘overflows’ into a portion of the body that was not designed to store magical energy. This causes the body considerable stress, as the immune system perpetually attacks a foreign object that has no physical forms.
This, combined with the scarcely understood properties of mana itself leads to a gradual but profound effect on patients of the disease. Symptoms of Mana Dysplasia include fatigue, increased appetite, and most prominently, accelerated aging.
Cassidian has had this illness since the start of his retirement, and studies day and night in search of a cure. As Mana Dysplasia is a rarely seen condition, little of it is documented. Leaving him to research for a cure all of his own.

-------------------------

Backstory: Cassidian was born to a long line of water mages. Magic did not run in the blood, but this traditional lineage meant that he, like his father and mother before him, quickly took to water manipulation, and other simple water spells. His fate was not merely to be just a skilled mage of the water spells, for an accident occurred while training that he hasn’t the foggiest memory of. It occurred when he was but a wee lad, and it permanently turned his skin a rather dusty shade of blue. His parents were anxious, and saw this as a bad omen, but were not so heartless as to disown their child over something such as that. Nonetheless, that sense of worry was something young Cassidian could feel, and not wanting to stress his parents further, he struck out on his own as soon as he was physically able.

As a traveling mage, learning from libraries, guesswork, and wild experimentation in the wilderness. Cassidian eventually caught the attention of an adventurer’s guild, and thus began the first major successes of his life. Progressing from ridding basements of pests, to looting ruins and caverns, and even so far as to slay a wyvern that was harassing travelers. Cassidian’s reputation became both far-reaching and positive, and the better an adventurer was known, the more money they would make. By the time he was 36, The Blue Mage had decided to retire.

Cassidian had enough money for more than his remaining lifetime, sure, but ultimately, he regrets this decision. Now, too weak, too rusty when it comes to adventuring, and too fat to even put on his old gear. He has decided to seek out the next best thing. Picking out an apprentice, and passing on his magical knowledge.
However, his retirement was not solely a financial choice. At the peak of his fame. Shortly after his 36th birthday. Cassidian received a vision during a casual Tasseography session. It was a surreal and unworldly sight. His silhouetted form in an unfamiliar void, an ethereal substance pooled in his torso. Followed by a second vision of himself. Older and heavier, hunched over a table in deep study. Frightened, Cassidian soon concluded that this vision meant he would soon contract Mana Dysplasia.

In an attempt to avert this fate. A retirement intended as temporary was his course of action. The symptoms of Mana Dysplasia soon manifested, however. He already had the disease- the reckless casting that had brought Cassidian his fame now led to its end. And so The Blue Mage no longer traveled the world.

Goals: To pass on his knowledge to a worthy apprentice. To find a cure for Mana Dysplasia.

Wishes: To be remembered as the adventurer he once was.
