It's a bird's nest with an egg in it. In the latest episode, Sheldon explained he had a huge fear of birds, and spent about half the episode trying to shoo a blue jay off of the ledge outside his window. Eventually the bird entered the apartment, and he slowly got over his fear and developed a fondness for it. He was going to keep it as a pet, but it flew away just as he was really getting attached to it. At the end of the episode, he reveals to Leonard that he found the bird's nest with an egg in it, and says "I'm going to be a mommy." XD
