A TURP Quest Story

By: Maplefeather

Suka: Aspen

Aspen walked through the foggy valleys of the rust, the dew clinging to her fur, and moisture was heavy on the air. It was starting to become dark out, and the sun hung low on the horizon, but tonight was cloudy, and very few of the rays reached the traveling Suka. She could already feel the evening chill seeping into her bones. Aspen had arrived in the rust to investigate rumors she’d heard of Suka’s disappearing to the mist. She personally believed it was bull crap and that Suka’s were just getting lost and were struggling to find their way home.

She had spent a lot of time earlier in the day talking to locals to get their take on the story she’d heard. Many of them relayed the same information that she had heard in rumors that when a suka entered the fogs at night, they weren’t returning. It was weird, to say the least, and it piqued Aspen’s interest.  She knew there was probably little truth in what the local packs were saying, but something was happening, so she felt obligated to check it out. It had even begun to turn into a story to keep pups from wandering at night. So she had prepared herself and headed out to explore the rumors.

As the sun dipped below the horizon and the moon began to shine, everything around Aspen was plunged into darkness and moonlight. The haze began to thicken, causing Aspen to felt a little unsettled she reminded herself fog was harmless. She padded quietly across the hard dirt ground and brushing past the long grasses into the long-abandoned settlement where other beings had once lived. She thought back to the little pack she’d helped a little while back and smiled, She hoped they were doing well.

Everything was eerily quiet, the buildings outline barely visible by the moonlight. The wind tousled Aspen’s fur and the surrounding greeniry, yet nothing seemed out of place or amiss to Aspen. Sure, it looked creepy, but there was nothing that would stick out to the suka as a mist eating monster. Picking up her head she raised her voice,” Anyone out here?”, She wasn’t surprised when she didn’t receive a reply, she heard her voice bounces around and echo off the many surfaces surrounding her, it sent a chill down her back. Shaking her head, she scoffed at the rumors, they appeared to be just that. Just as she was satisfied with exploring and passing through the abandoned buildings, she turned to find her way out of the town, but something seemed wrong.

She had reached a central back part of the town, and if it hadn’t been for the faint scent of rotting flesh, she wouldn’t have noticed. Following her nose, she stumbled upon a very gruesome sight that was almost enough to make her vomit. Before her was a medium-sized pile of Suka corpses, most in different forms of decay as well as a fair number that had obviously been eaten. It wasn’t the fog eating Sukas, it was the infected. How one had gone unnoticed in the rust for so long was beyond her, but this situation was hazardous. Sick to her stomach Aspen turned away, there was nothing that could be done for those poor souls now. Quite as she could, she knew she needed to leave now.

As she padded down the old stone streets, she felt sadness, disgust, and dread over what she’d just witnessed, Aspen was so focused on those feelings she didn’t notice the confusion that began to fall over her mind.  She was struggling to remember what direction she had entered the old town from, and that was strange for her. That’s when she began to feel her breathing become labored, She didn’t understand why she was breathing so heavy, but a painful and primal feeling of fear was starting to develop deep in her.  She turned on her heels to begin to run, but her body didn’t listen. Her legs felt week, her vision began to swim. Something was wrong, and that’s when Aspen realized she was in trouble.

When she tried to pick up her pace, her paws collapsed from under her, and she was lying on the cold ground, her mind racing, she struggled back to her paws. Sounds were rising up from around her, Small whispered, the became louder and more persistent. Terrible crunching sounds and the gnashing of teeth, that’s when Aspen knew she wasn’t alone ad was now part of a very dangerous game of cat and mouse. On her wobbly weak legs Aspen did her best to maintain a fast pace, she needed to escape, if she didn’t escape it would be the death of her

She shook her head, trying to clear the fog that seemed to have settled over her mind. It was just like the mists settled in the valley around her. She didn’t know what was affecting her, was it the fogs? That’s when something clicked in her brain, she needed to get uphill, she needed to get above the mists. She began to weakly pull herself up a large hill just outside of the town. With her weak legs and sluggish body, it was going to be a challenge. The sounds of crunching and whispers grew deafeningly loud around her. As she dragged herself up the hill as best, she could. Aspen barely registered that she was hurting herself. Every stumble, every time she wiggled through a bush, she would get fresh scrapes and gashes across her body, but that was at the back of her mind. The only thing she could think of was escaping.

When Aspen thought she’d made it far enough away and was finally clear of the mists and in the fresh mountain air, she began to feel her lungs open up, and her breathing began to slow. The feeling in her limbs began to return to her, and not too long after that, her vision cleared. She still felt weakened, though, and she knew she wouldn’t be moving from this spot for the rest of the night. Weakly struggling to her paws, Aspen looked down from where she had came and saw something in the mist that gave her chills. Looking back at her was a Suka in the fog. The only thing she could see was the outline, the Sukas grinning white teeth, and moon glaze eyes. Frozen in place, Aspen simply stared back. The infected made no attempt to leave the fog, simply stared at Aspen for a few more moments before disappearing back into the foggy valley.

Aspen collapsed on her small island top in fog, her wounds oozing, panting from panic and exhaustion. It had been a year since her last encounter with an infected, and it scared her, it scared her badly. She felt tears well up in her eyes and spend the rest of her evening on that hilltop reliving horrors from her past and thanking the gods she was still alive this night.

In the morning Aspen left the valley and went to relay her findings to the locals, She saw many saddened faces that day and grieved with all of them over the terrible disease that had snatched many loved ones away. She warned them to never enter the fogs due to the nature it seemed to carry and left as she arrived, a lonely stranger traveling in the night.
