Just a little something I was toying with. I really liked my last placement of Abeir, but some folks didn't like losing Halruaa (don't know why - its not like anyone was using it LOL). In this one, I've changed Returned Abeir itself somewhat, to make it more realistic, and less fantasy-ish/Atlantean. Now that I am revisiting this, I'm not so sure about connecting it to Lantan anymore. Otherwise, though, I think a really nifty campaign could be made just in this region alone (especially if someone were to use my Razor Coast/Chult conversion, which I will add to this, if people show any interest in this). I figure a LOT of trade would be passing through that straight, between points south and Zakhara, and the greater Forgotten Realms, and we already have a 'pirate area' right nearby. This is one I am on the verge of abandoning, unless I get some feedback that asks me otherwise, so please comment below.Related content

I run 2 campaigns in Halruaa myself. One is a group of gnomes that are respected because upon their arrival in Halruaa they saved an airship from destruction, then they won an open magic tournament and during the competition saved one of the ruling councils Son's (also a mage) from the clutches of Hell. Another group comes and goes frequently because they are the captain and crew of a merchant ship that does all of their trade in the Great Sea. I do like your placement of Abeir for all the reasons you have stated. In fact it seems like a no-brainer and can't imagine it anywhere else....

Actually, my current campaign is based in Halruaa and Dambrath. Quiet fun actually, half of the time the Mystra priest needs to keep a very low profile a bit later it's the Loviatar priestess.
Anyway as for the Map... well since nothing past 3.5 happened in my world (or is going to happen) I personally have no interest in it. If anything I would rather see the other continents of Toril explored. Seems like a pretty workable solution though. (If we assume it's arrival didn't create a Tsunami big enough to devastate the entire coastline of Faerun. ^^)
